ISO boot image too large for CD-R - alternatives?

I've just finished setting up a new Lenovo T61 Thinkpad with XP Pro and about 30G of apps and data on C-drive, and creating a full Retrospect backup set to Infrant ReadyNAS NV+ server. However when running the wizard to create the bootable iso image I got a warning that it's too large (ended up at 927MB). I didn't bother trying to burn.

Since no vendor ships OS media disks anymore, where does that leave me? How do I recover if I have no boot disk and no OS disti CD? Do you document any of these situations someplace?
