If select folder as source for Duplicate, how select destination on 2nd volume?

Recommended Posts

How do you create and use a destination folder on a second volume on the same hard drive without taking over the entire volume?

(I'd like to be able to duplicate my Microsoft User Database folder from one volume to another on the same hard drive. I have three volumes: one for the Leopard operating system, one for non-OS applications, and a third for all my data.)

Your counsel,please.

Respectfully, Norm

- First, create an empty folder. This will become your Destination Volume for your Duplicate

- Next, in Immediate->Duplicate, click on "Destination"

- In the Destination Selection window that opens, click on the hard drive that contains the folder you created above

- Click on "Subvolume..."

- Navigate to the empty folder you created above

- Select the empty folder and click on "Define"

Your empty folder will now be listed in the Volumes Database, and can be used as a Destination for Duplicates (or as a Source for Backups)

Destinations for Backups are Backup Sets. There are different Types of Backup Sets, each with its own options for media. Tape Backup Sets are stored on Tapes, Internet Backup Sets are stored on FTP servers, etc.

If you want to keep a File Backup Set in a specific place on a specific volume, just save it there when you crate it, or move it wherever you want to and then double-click it to show Retrospect the correct location.

I created a script that worked to backup two folders on one volume to a folder on another volume. When I added a schedule, I ran into problems, however. "Retrospect Script . . . failed during automatic execution, error -45 (file locked)." The catalog file, indeed, was locked when I did a "get info." I entered my password and unlocked the catalog file. It locked up again as soon as I closed the window. Suggestions, please?

Respectfully, Norm

Edited to add: The schedule I added was to backup at a specific time with an interval of daily. After I couple failures, I removed the schedule, and the script worked without error even though the catalog file was locked when I checked after the script ran. ???

Sorry for not being clear: I backed up to a backup set within a folder. I added a schedule for each day at noon.

I have since removed that schedule, run the script and then re-added a schedule identical to the one I had trashed. For whatever reason, the newly scheduled script worked fine.

Respectfully, Norm

Edited to insert the words: "identical to the one"
