buachille
hi, i have lots of mp3s on my machine, and retrospect always seems to decide to back them up again when they have not been changed and they have not been moved. why is it doing this and how can i stop it. it often leads to a backup that should be 700mb being 5 gigabytes. it only happens with music files. if anybody can explain i'd be chuffed, and if you have a fix, even better!! tkrueger
I'm wondering if the id3 tags might be changing? Some music players will update the tags automatically.

Well, the easy way to tell would be to look at the modify date; that's an easy experiment to do. And if that changes, then it's a different file and should be backed up again. You don't say what version of Retrospect you have, but see, for example, the section on "Matching Execution Options" on page 242 of the Retrospect (Windows) 7.5 Users Guide. If the modify date (time) changes, you won't get a match with a file in the backup set, with good reason, and you are expecting the impossible. You say you don't want to exclude these files by a selector, but yet you don't seem to want to back them up if they change. What's a backup program to do? Russ i'm using retrospect pro (fully up to date 7.5). i will check if the modify date is being changed. however, if the modify date is being changed for some reason, but the files are identical, it is a bit of an annoyance. i do accept your point on, "what's a backup program to do" though. just don't understand how an unmodified mp3 would be considered modified. If the modify date is getting changed, then some program is opening the file for write, doing a write, and then a close. I'd blame Bill Gates. mwexler
So will iTunes. In fact, most players these days feel that they have the right to edit your files. It can be very annoying.

It can be very annoying. I couldn't agree more with what you say about this being very annoying. However, lately I have noticed that I've not been having this problem which is a relief!! But i have no idea what has changed to stop the problem occurring??? Edited August 26, 2008 by Guest
