patrices
Are the document files backed up by Retro Express HD 1.1 recoverable by any other means than using the restore function on HD 1.1.27? I've not been able to restore some of the files (document files) even though they show up in the list of restorable files. Is there a data recovery program that can open these files since Retro Express doesn't seem to be able to?
Mayoff
Only Retrospect Express or Retrospect can read data saved by a Retrospect Express products. The data is saved in a Retrospect format. Maybe you should provide us with some details about the problem so we can try to help?
patrices
I did a complete system backup prior to replacing my hard drive. When I restored all the document folders all most all of the files in the the first five folders failed to restore (I've got about 28,000 files in many folders). I could see the missing files, but when I tried to restore them I got the following error for each file (I've provided just an excerpt below): Executing DirectRestore at 12/9/2007 10:14 PM To volume Restore 3 on Local Disk (C:)... -12/9/2007 10:14:04 PM: Restoring from RestorePoint3 Additional error information for Disk Backup Set member "1-RestorePoint3", Can't write to file E:\Retrospect Restore Points\Retrospect\RestorePoint3\1-RestorePoint3\AA000000.rdb, error -1101 (file/directory not found) Additional error information for Disk Backup Set member "1-RestorePoint3", Can't write to file E:\Retrospect Restore Points\Retrospect\RestorePoint3\1-RestorePoint3\AA000000.rdb, error -1101 (file/directory not found) Trouble reading: "RestorePoint3" (14260), error -102 (trouble communicating) Additional error information for Disk Backup Set member "1-RestorePoint3", I contacted Seagate for assistance (I've got a Maxtor external drive that came with Retrospect HD 1.0) and they suggested I upgrade to version 1.1.127 and upgrade the .Net file in Windows (I'm running Windows XP professional). So I did that. Now when I try to restore the files I get the following error message: Executing DirectRestore at 12/13/2007 9:38 PM To volume Restore 4 on Local Disk (C:)... -12/13/2007 9:38:56 PM: Restoring from RestorePoint3 12/13/2007 9:38:57 PM: Execution incomplete Remaining: 1 files, 3,082 KB Completed: 0 files, zero KB Performance: 0.0 MB/minute The backup I performed after the upgrades restores just fine. It's just those before the upgrade that I get the above error message for. I did a *.* search on the external drive and the missing files don't show up in the list of files (over 28,000), however they do show up in the list of files backed up in the restore point. I've got several restore points, as I knew my hard drive needed replacing and I backed up every few days. I also saved a duplicate backup copy of all of my documents, but for some reason the first few folders didn't get duplicated (which unfortunately I hadn't noticed when I did the duplicate). Seagate says they can probably recover the files but I have to send my external drive to them and they analyze, etc. then tell me what it will cost, etc. Sounds pretty expensive! I'd like to be able to do this myself, but just don't know where to start.
Mayoff
So what you are seeing is that 1 file could not be restored. What is this file you selected? You can try to delete the .rbc file on the external HD. Reopen Express HD, and let it do a catalog rebuild. Then try the restore again.
patrices
There are several files that could not be restored. I just happened to pick just one when I ran restore this last time. And now that I've upgraded to 1.1.127 I am always getting this error message (for one file or for hundreds of files): Executing DirectRestore at 12/13/2007 9:38 PM To volume Restore 4 on Local Disk (C:)... -12/13/2007 9:38:56 PM: Restoring from RestorePoint3 12/13/2007 9:38:57 PM: Execution incomplete Remaining: 1 files, 3,082 KB Completed: 0 files, zero KB Performance: 0.0 MB/minute I get this whenever I try to restore anything from the backups prior to my upgrade to 1.1.127 - even system files or anything. The "lost" files I'm trying to restore are .doc, .pdf, and .ppt files. What will a catalog rebuild do for me? It it showing ALL of the restore points and ALL of the files within those restore points. I just can't restore them.
Mayoff
A catalog rebuild will hopefully fix the problem. It won't hurt.
patrices
I followed the instructions in the Knowledge base and did the catalog restore. This has made the matter even worse. I had weekly store points going back over a year and how I only have restore points going back to the first of October. Also, many of the folder and files that had previously been showing up as restorable are now missing from the list in the restore point. It seems to have hurt more than helped. A *.* search on the external drive shows the same number of files on the disk as before, however many of those files are not showing up in the list of restorable files in the restore points. Any other ideas? Can a professional data recovery service get back the files that are missing?
Mayoff
If the catalog rebuild completed without error, then Retrospect is displaying an accurate picture of the data available for a restore. If you have concerns, try to download a trial of Retrospect 7.5 and use it to do a catalog rebuild. Retrospect 7.5 uses more error reporting, so if something is wrong with the data files, Retrospect will tell you during the catalog rebuild. patrices
A search of the external drive shows many more restore points than the catalog rebuild now shows. I didn't get any error message during the catalog rebuild. It just stopped rebuilding. Is there a place where I can look at the error log (other than clicking on one of the restore points)? Perhaps there was an error during the rebuild but it just didn't give me notice of the error.
Mayoff
Express HD showed very limited errors. If you have concerns, try to download a trial of Retrospect 7.5 and use it to do a catalog rebuild. Retrospect 7.5 uses more error reporting, so if something is wrong with the data files, Retrospect will tell you during the catalog rebuild.
