randun
I just upgraded to Windows Vista. Due to numerous problems encountered with the initial upgrade I was forced to do an upgrade that amounted to a clean install, saving my initial version of Windows Vista to Windows.old. In addition, most likely due to user error, I lost numerous archived emails. So, I no longer have my email with the license code. I have been using 7.5 since early January and have files backed up to my external hard drive. My question is is there no registration file in the 7.5 Windows.old program files folder that can be retrieved? Thanks.
Mayoff
First off, Calling EMC Insignia staff names is not cool and your post has been edited. This is a violation of the forum rules. License code is stored in the config75.dat file and config75.bak file. If you have registered the product with us, then our customer service can give you the license code over email or phone. You just need to ask them.
randun
Firstly, thank you for your quick reply. Secondly, I'll apologize for breaking forum rules. I certainly did not use names in voicing my opinion of the lack of assistance I received from Customer Service. Please allow me to put this into context. I first inquired via email in a very courteous manner. The representative that answered back stating that they showed that I had a license for 7.0 only. I replied back with a copy of my credit card receipt not knowing if it was a purchase of 7.0 or the 7.5 upgrade. He never responded back. I then called and tried to be as courteous as possible with the representative that I reached. She was not knowledgeable at all. I repeatedly asked her if there were ‘pointer’ files in my old directory that might indicate that I had a valid copy of 7.5. I indicated to her that I had been using 7.5 since late 2006 based on file dating and that my external hard drive was filled with Retrospect 7.5 back-up files. After putting me on hold several times to consult someone offline, she came back and told me that they had “multiple accounts” (?) for me, there were no pointer files in my old Retrospect directory that would indicate my license code, and that the only way that I could prove that I had a valid copy was through a credit card receipt. This was after being on my phone for at least 15 minutes. Thus, my utter frustration with CS via the email & phone routes. That said I have located the config75.dat & config.bak files in my Retrospect 7.5 directory in my Windows.old directory. Given that the files cannot be read (or at least I don’t know how to!) I can’t tell if the license is there or not. Your advice is to call CS back, and if the product is registered, they will give me the license code. If so, one of the problems as alluded to above is that they don’t seem to show that I have a registered copy of 7.5. So, how will the data files help me prove that I have a licensed copy of 7.5? As I stated earlier, I have backup files on my external hard drive dating back to 11/10/2006. I really don’t know what else to do. Thanks.
Mayoff
Have you tried putting the files back into the appropriate directory on the new system? Try this: http://kb.dantz.com/article.asp?article=9635&p=
randun
Bingo! Thanks so much. I should have visited this forum first!
randun
Well, I'm hoping you can assist me again! After realizing that I needed v7.5.387 to run under Vista I followed the directions and uninstalled Retrospect 7.5 then restarted. To avoid any potential licensing snafus again, I then installed 7.0 & entered my license code, then restarted. I then upgraded 7.0 to 7.5 with the original 7.5 installer then restarted. Finally, I upgraded the driver to v7.5.387 and restarted yet again. After all of this I continually get the following error after starting the backup process in 7.5. The error dialog pops up after Retrospect scans my hard drive then tries to implemet the backup. "Assertion failure at elem.cpp-993" I followed the instructions in the KB re this error for resolution (or thought I did!) Ideas? Thanks.
Mayoff
7.0 should never be installed on vista. I would uninstall and reinstall 7.5. If it still fails, try a different backup set. If it still fails, run a check disk on the C drive. If needed, remove the Retrospect preferences and try with a new set of config files.
randun
I tried a different backup set & it worked! I have one last question...I hope. Now that I have a new OS in place & everything is now functioning nominally, I'd like to start my backup from scratch. What would you suggest to be the safest & easiest method for doing so? Mayoff
Creating a new backup set is a good way to start the backup from scratch, and you already did this.
randun
Well, created a new backup set but it resides on the same external drive as the old set and the drive is full. I'm talking about cleaning out the external drive and creating an entirely new backup set.
randun
Unfortunately, I had to do yet another upgrade install of Vista! Now, I'm back to square one with Retrospect again. Your tip of changing renaming configXX.dat & configXX.bak does not work this time. In fact the latter file is not even created. Also, it appears that I have numerous copies of 7.5 on my hard drive now. Since I don't have the email receipt for my version 0f 7.5 & EMC presumably doesn't have a record of my upgrade, do you now have further suggestions of how I can just start over, ridding myself of the multiple copies of 7.5, etc. Thanks.
