getting permission errors/can't set user and password in security prefs

two problems for the brain trust. I've tried searching the forum but I'm not sure I know the right terms for all of this. here's the scoop:

retropro 7.5 with all updates on a windows xp sp2 box. I'm trying to duplicate files from a server across the network from me. if I do a manual execution the dupe process works fine. if I set a schedule for unattended duplication it fails with insufficient permissions (the ol' -1017 error). three other unattended scripts work fine.

I've tried setting the applicable user name and password in the xp services control panel, but this doesn't work. I've also tried setting the appropriate user name/password log on in retro's preferences>execution>security panel but that tells me it "can't grant necessary user privileges". the user name being tried has full xp administrator privileges.

any ideas?
