Need help to rebuild catalog from tape.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have Retrospect 6.1.138 on a G4 running OS 10.2.8. I lost some catalog files and am trying to rebuild them from tape. I have 11 SDLT tapes from a backup done in 2002. I am using a Dell PowerVault 110T external SCSI SDLT tape drive.

Retrospect sees the tape drive just fine. It reads the tape header just fine. However, when I do the actual rebuild process, it reads the tape for about 5 seconds, and then quits reading. The mouse icon (that looks like 2 gears) is still moving. I do not get any error messages or anything to really go on. It just stops reading. I have tried a couple different tapes and it does the same thing on all of them. If I cancel the process, Retrospect will sit there forever saying "Canceling execution..." However, the instant I power off the tape drive, Retrospect starts responding again.

There is a blinking orange light on the drive that has "220" next to it. I also cannot eject the tape without power cycling the drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank You!

What's missing here is any indication a to the model of Macintosh you are using, the make/model/firmware revision of the SCSI host bus adapter being used, or the RDU (Retrospect Driver Update) file loading.

That stuff's important.

Sorry about that. The computer is a 450 MHz PowerPC G4 (the gray one with the clear handles). The SCSI card is an "Adaptec APD-29160 mac." I'm not sure how to find the firmware revision. Hope that helps, but let me know if you need more info.

Thanks

The System Profiler should show this. The latest ROM version issued for this card was v1.2.

Also check the driver version at /System/Library/Extensions/; it should be v1.2.

Updates for the firmware and driver are available at http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/support/mac/scsi/APD-29160/.

We used this host adapter successfully with OS versions up to about 10.3.5 (it failed under later versions, including 10.3.9), so it should be usable under 10.2.8, assuming that the card is physically OK.

If the firmware and driver are up-to-date, be sure that the SCSI termination and cables are all OK. (With LVD cables, it's easy to bend one of those thin pins out of line when plugging a device in.) Try using a different cable or terminator, if you have one.

Is the tape drive the only device in the SCSI chain? If not, try removing the other devices and see if this helps. What SCSI target ID are you using? You might try dialing in a different one (don't use 0 or 7).

You might also try removing and replacing the card (with the computer off, of course) in case the contacts are dirty, or trying it in a different slot.

Also check out the Knowledgebase article SCSI Troubleshooting.
