karelles
A client with a 400 MHz G4 running 9.2.1, a Yamaha SCSI CD-RW and Retrospect 5 does immediate backups just fine. The CD-R disk (not RW) is recognizable by RE and files can be restored from it. I recall that the formatting system is different from the Mac formatting system so the cd can't be recognized by the finder so it didn't surprise me when he put the cd in and the system told him that the cd couldn't be recognized, Erase or Initialize? If you start RE and go through the motions of either backing up or restoring until the point where it tells you that no media is available and then put in the cd, it is available and will accept immediate incremental backups. When I set up a script for weekly backup, however, it still doesn't recognize the cd and gives the "Erase" and "Initialize" buttons. So I tried leaving the program running which seemed to work, although logically the purpose of the extension is to permit one to shut down the program. My client called me the morning it was supposed to backup at 4 am and informed me that RE was no longer running and the Erase or Initialize box was back. The manual implies that one can script normal backups (especially small ones - his documents folder, which is all we need to back up in a script, is only about 200 MB and the incremental backups would only be about 20 MB at most) to a cd-r. I have only used the full version of Retrospect before, to do scripted backup to tape or file. I have always before been able to do an immediate backup and then use that media for scripted backups. I feel like I am missing something obvious - what?
