I Need Help! I can't restore backup!!

Recommended Posts

I recently installed a new hard drive after backing up all my data on a previously partioned drive. I was able to restore the main set, but when I went to restore my graphics HD I get all kinds of errors! The first one gave me an indication that it may have been a corrupt backup set, so I recataloged using the media. Now when I go to restore the HD I get a window titled "Matching..." and my cursor hangs.

I've reinstalled the software several times and on different partitions and physical drives... I can't even get it to restore from the CD! Does anyone know a solution?? I have several extremely important files that I need to get off these disks and this is very very frustrating!!

If I understand your post correctly - you backed up to a hard drive? If you go to Configure > Backup Sets and Configure the set you are using, does it say File backup set or Disk backup set?

What CD? Your earlier post indicated that you backed up to a hard drive. Did you also back up to a CD?

It would be helpful to have configuration information - OS, drive make/models, interface, etc.

Also - what about error messages? Are there any errors listed in your log?

What version of Retrospect did the backup? What OS?

Details, details, details... please.

Now THAT was a fun reply!! 'Kay... let's see if I can get this answer correct for you...

Retrospect Express 4.3, Mac OS 9.2, Mac G4 455 MP, 512 Mb RAM, external Firewire CD-RW.

Okay, then...

1) I backed up a partitioned hard drive (3 partitions) to several CD-RW's. Restoring from partition 1 worked fine. I didn't back up partition 2, and partition 3 (the most important one) wasn't restoring from the backup set created.

2) Every time I tried to recover partition 3, I kept having issues. The error messages (no, I haven't checked the log) I kept getting led me to believe I may have a corrupt or unfinished backup set. So I deleted the existing backup set and recreated the catalog using the archived disks of partition 3.

3) This didn't work either... I kept getting the same issue. Since I now have a new HD with several partitions, I loaded Mac OS 9.2 on three of them and then loaded Express on each one.

4) No matter which one I tried to recover from, it never worked... back to square one.

5) I boot from my official Retrospect CD for 'disaster recovery.' No go... it's telling me it can't find my Firewire burner!

6) I struggle and struggle with what could possibly be the issue. By this time, I've rebuilt the catalog at least five times.

7) In one last attempt, I optimize my new main HD and reload the Express software. As backup I head to your site, download the extension update, leave my post and install the update.

8) I restart and recatalog using my CD-RW media.

SUCCESS!!!

I don't know what I did differently other than troubleshoot my drive and fix any problems that seemed to be there. So I was able to fix the problem, but I'm not sure what the original problem was, although I lean very, very heavily towards a corrupt or bad backup set file. In fact, the last time, I saved the backup set to a completely different location than I had the previous times... maybe that had something to do with it!

My thanks for your quick response to my post. I hope this info helps out someone else!

P.S. The software works absolutely fantastically... despite my goofiness! Oh, one more thing... I have one partition set aside specifically for a backup. Will there be any problems with that?

Thank you for the update - I'm glad it all worked out! : )

Depending on where the failure was occuring - it could have been:

1. The drive wasn't properly supported without the Driver Update

2. Bad sector on the hard drive where the catalog was originally being stored

Or even something else...

Not knowing which CD burner you're using, I'd vote for number 1. In any case, problem solved.
