edthemacdyer
System: QuickSilver G4/Mac OS 9.2.2 & Retrospect Express 5.0236 & FW Sony DRX-120L (DVD+RW) Device works great with HP DVD+RW media, but automatic backups bring up the device screen with the internal CDRW and external DVD+RW drive prompting to insert media which will be named "1-Backup Set A". The only thing is that such a disc (pre-erased by me as "1-Backup Set A") already exists in the drive (and the device listing shows this to be true, even as it's prompting the user) so my thinking is that it should sense this and proceed automatically. Afterall, it's an automatic backup scheduled to be run at a particular time. But each day the client comes in and the backup is stuck on that prompting screen. How does one set express to do one or all of these?: 1. forget about the internal CD-RW, forcing it to use the DVD+RW drive? 2. Set the DVD+RW to be used first, not second in order of preference? 3. do something else to by pass this problem? Thanks

Don't name the discs ahead of time. Erase them and leave them untitled. This will ensure they are being used. 1. forget about the internal CD-RW, forcing it to use the DVD+RW drive? --- Leave media only in the DVD+RW drive. You can also to to Configure > Devices > Device Status, and have Retrospect "ignore" the CD-RW drive. 2. Set the DVD+RW to be used first, not second in order of preference? --- The only way to force Retrospect to use a particular drive is to leave a disk that has the correct name in the drive or use the disk to backup at least 1 file ahead of time so that Retrospect has named it, which makes it a backup set member. That Retrospect is not automatically taking the disk with the correct name indicates the disk is not named correctly. Run the backup and look to see what Retrospect wants to name the disk. "Please insert a new disc. It will be named...."
edthemacdyer
Turns out that good 'ol retrospect just needed to name the discs itself and backup once. Once I did that, subsequent tries backed up automatically. Thanks!
