LOUDpedal
I downloaded the latest patch to RE 5.0 which helped my backups to my USB Orb 2.2 drive (at least my drive icon doesn't disappear anymore) but I still can't get it to back up my OS X partition (4.6 GB, approximately 130,000 files). Now, it gets to the "erasing" part and never goes any further. I'm doing a recycle backup with verification and compression. Has anyone else had this problem? It's been nearly two months since I've installed Jaguar and did a full backup. I think this is getting pretty rediculous especially from "the number one Mac backup utility." I'm about to start searching for a new solution. I'm using a 400 MHz iMac G3 DV SE with 384 MB RAM and a 20 GB hard drive. It has a 14 GB partition for OS X and a 6 GB parition for Classic. I haven't had any other problems with any other carbonized apps for Jaguar.
LOUDpedal
This post should have been in the OS X section. Sorry. I managed to get the backup to work this evening. The problem may have been that I tried to do a recycle backup even though my Backup Set was empty and my disks were already erased. I had RE forget my Backup Set A and created a new Set (came back as Backup Set A), had RE do a normal backup (instead of a recycle backup) and it went OK. It gave me a "bad media or dirty head" error once on one of my disks, but since I didn't have another disk at my house, I just put it back in and it worked fine (aside from errors on a number of files). All of these issues I've had make me think that RE 5.0 is a little buggy and not very dependable. When I was having problems on Saturday, it was the only time I've had to use the hard reset button on my iMac and I had to unplug/replug my Orb drive to get it to eject the disk. It really put my system on the rocks until I hit the hard reset. I hope that Dantz does some serious work with making the whole application rock solid with Jaguar. If there is ever an application that has to be solid, it's something that is most useful when a system experiences a catastrophe.
AmyJ
Please keep in mind that ORB drives are not fully compatible with OS X at this time. From the Castlewood support site http://www.castlewood.com/faq.html: ---------- 10. Does the ORB drive function with Mac OS X? A. Yes and no. The ORB driver is not compatible with OS X but you can still access the drive by launching the Classic 9 portion of the operating system. ---------- A drive that is not natively compatible in the OS you are using may not be the best drive choice for backup.
