torgo
I'd like to specify certain folders on a volume to back up, since not every folder on the volume needs to be backed up. I thought I could do it in the Volumes Database window with the Browse button and somehow selecting these folders, but it didn't work. I also read that I could create subvolumes or Selectors, but I'm having trouble following the descriptions of these things in the manual and can't figure out which to use/if to use these methods to back up only certain folders. What is the simpliest (I'm really new to Retrospect and am learning as I encounter problems with the system set up by someone else) way to set Retrospect to back up only certain folders on a volume? AmyJ
The following tutorial should help out. http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=kbase&ACTION=KBASE&id=27678
torgo
Okay...that was helpful - thank you! But now I have another question related to this, and I can sense it is a complete newbie question...now that I have my subvolumes defined, and they are appearing in my volume database window, is there another piece I need to set up, or will retrospect only look to those two subvolumes and back up what is within them without me needing to configure, or highlight, or anything else? I'm a little baffled because these folders are within the mounted server (mounted on the back up computer - may not be the best set up, I think) and I can't find a way to do the configure thing with the back up computer, if it is needed. sorry to be so dense... AmyJ
Defining subvolumes only sets them as _possible_ sources to be backed up. The actual backup is done by setting up an Immediate Backup or an Automated Backup. When setting up your backup, you will need to choose your "Sources" - in this case, rather then choosing an entire drive, you would choose the subvolumes that you have defined. Our Tutorialscolor=blue> section will walk you through many common proceedures, such as backup methods.
torgo
It's becoming clearer...So, to specify only a couple folders in a volume to back up, I would need to add them as sources and, most likely, remove the "parent" volume from the source list..? Because leaving the parent volume selected would be redundant, and everything in it would continue to be backed up, correct? I will check out that tutorials section too...thank you! AmyJ
I've think you've got it! : ) Yes, remove the root level of the drive - adding the root level, in addition to the subvolumes, would be redundant.
