maaki
Is it possible with Retrospect Express 4.3 for Macintosh to restore a folder to the state it was in at a particular date, without including all the files and folders that had been deleted from the source before that date? The folder I am interested in, would have contained some 20,000 to 30,000 files, along with a variety of log and other files that get put there by the software process. The files in the source folder would have been constantly changing, and are not readable by anything except the parent software, (FirstClass Personal). With an accumulation of over 100,000 files in the StoragetSet backup on Jaz disks, there were just too many to go through and mark individually. So I simply restored it all. The result was that every version of every file, backed up over many sessions, was restored. For example, Retrospect Express restored 54 versions of each of the logs, (each version being identified with a hyphen and extra digits before the dot of the suffix). 54 copies ---- FirstClass® Client 3.51.log --to---> FirstClass® Client 3.51-53.log 54 copies ---- FirstClass® Client.fcd --to---> FirstClass® Client-53.fcd 54 copies ---- FirstClass® Personal.log --to---> FirstClass® FirstClass® Personal-53.log Similarly there were dozens of copies of "ENInfo" files in each subfolder, when the FirstClass software wants only one copy per folder. The resulting FirstClass Personal software in the restored folder was not able to access any of the messages in the Personal Post Office. I expect it was because there were over 70,000 files restored that would not have been present in the source folder at the time of the last backup. If I need to upgrade to another version of Restrospect, will it be able to restore a folder from my existing Jaz StorageSet, to the state the source was in at the time of the last backup without restoring contents that were no longer in the source folder at that time? Also will I be able to choose to restore a folder to the state it was in at any other particular date, without having to mark tens of thousands of individual files? AmyJ
Yes - when setting up the restore, use the option to 'Restore files from a backup' rather then 'Search for files and folders'. This will allow you to restore a folder back to the exact state it was in on the choosen day. As you are using the Express edition, you will only have access to the latest snapshots. You will need to use the Desktop verison or higher to access historical snapshots.
maaki
Thanks, Amy. The storage set to which my question refers, is on 6 Jaz disks. If I upgrade to the Desktop version of Retrospect, will I be able to restore a folder to an earlier date from this particular StorageSet made with the Express version?
