Faeton2002
For over nine months now, I've been puzzled by Retrospect's inability to find my built-in cd rewritable drive. I have a PowerMac G4 733 Mhz (Quicksilver), 512 Mb internal memory, the abovementioned cd drive built in. It is on the internal ATA bus, ID 0, with driver 1.4.7. I'm using system 9.2.2. Tried EVERYTHING that Dantz recommends, checked, double checked and checked a few times more all specifications of drivers etcetera. Uploaded and paid for all updates Dantz put out. And still Retrospect Express 5.0.205 refuses to locate the drive. I'm out of money, out of luck, and my data still remain unprotected and alone on my hard disk. What more can I do? Please Dantz techs, don't come to me with 'have you tried extensions off' or 'did you read our recommendations'! Yes, yes I have! A thousand times! Searched the forums, visited Macfixit too, tried anything. I still doesn't work! Did I spend my money for nothing? By the way, the drive works fine with Apple's cd burner and other apps. AmyJ
While in Retrospect, go to Configure > Devices > Device Status and list Vendor, Product and Version for your drive.
Faeton2002
Amy, I think you must have misunderstood. The very problem lies in the fact that the status panel doesn't list any cd-rw drive! It just isn't there for Retrospect. Rescanning the devices won't help. Now, what more can I do, except looking for an alternative backup utility? Please advice!
AmyJ
Try booting your computer with base extensions plus the following extensions: -Retrospect SDAP Support extension version 1.2 -The Authoring Support Update Extensions: A) Apple CD/DVD Driver version 1.4.7 SDAP Authoring Support version 1.2 C) Apple Packet Media Access version 1.0.1 The Retrospect Extensions Updater must be installed. ftp://ftp.dantz.com/pub/updates/sdap.hqx If you still don't have any luck, try booting with the above extensions, but disable Apple CD/DVD Driver version 1.4.7. Faeton2002
Tried everything you recommended, once again... still to no avail. The only difference I can see is in the SDAP authoring support extension, which is listed in my Extensions folder as version 1.0.1. It is part of the Authoring Support update 1.1.5. When looking for the latest update using Version Tracker, I tried to install version 1.1.9 which is the most recent. It cannot install over my localised (i.e. Dutch) system 9.2.2. Could this be causing my nightmare? And if so, is there a way around it? Please advice! Jeroen van Heemskerck Duker
AmyJ
Try downloading the latest Retrospect Driver Update: Updatescolor=blue> After installing, make sure it is loading by checking the Operations log.
Faeton2002
Amy, Did it - as I did a few times before - and it is loaded when Retrospect starts up. Latest driver update is listed as version 3.0.104 in my log, downloaded a few days before today. And still no cd-rw will show up... Faeton2002
Well, after nearly one year of aggrevation I am happy to present the solution! The answer is: DOWNGRADING. After some hickups of my Quicksilver G4, I decided to install a clean system, but the only one I could find in a hurry, was OS 9.2.1. Installed it, restarted with the old extension set, and everything worked fine! You should have seen me when the program finally recognised my CDRW unit. This was a hilarious moment. Thanks for the support. Jeroen
AmyJ
Hi Jeroen Thanks for the update. It sounds like the 'hiccups' in your environment may have also been preventing proper access to the CD burner.
