jcs
I have just upgraded to Retrospect Express 5.0 for the Macintosh (9.x). I am running 9.2.1 on a Power Mac G4 with an EZQuest 24/10/40 attached to a Firewire port. Dantz’s web site says that this device has been qualified. I have the following problem: When I try to back up a volume, all goes well until the program tries to write on the CD disk. If it calls for a disk that has not yet been inserted, and a CD/RW disk is inserted, it says that the disk is being erased, and after a short time a 100 type error is declared. If the disk has previously been inserted, it tells me to wait, and goes into and infinite loop. I have tried two other types of media, another brand of CD/RW and a CD/R disk, and they both go into infinite loops without writing anything. Do I need a special type of media, or what? AmyJ
According to the Device Compatibility search engine ( Hardware Search Enginecolor=blue>), this drive has the following requirements: Driver Update 2.7.102 Firmware Update 1.0C Driver updates can be obtained from: Updatescolor=blue> You can determine your version of firmware by going to Configure > Devices > Device Status. The Version column will list the firmware version of your drive. If you have anything but 1.0C or higher, you will need to contact your vendor for updates. If you are still receving this error, after ensuring that the driver and firmware is up to date, please try the following troubleshooting: Try new media and/or a different brand of media, such as TDK, Sony or Verbatim. Check with your drive manufacturer to see if they have specific recommendations. Try running a backup with minimal extensions to eliminate the possibility of a software conflict. If your backup device doesn't require special extensions to be seen, restart while holding down the shift key to turn extensions off. If your device requires special extensions, as most USB and FireWire devices do, use your Mac's Extension Manager to create a new set containing only Mas OS Base extensions plus those needed to access your device. Restart with this new set and try the backup again. Check to make sure you have the latest FireWire firmware update for your computer. Apple often releases firmware updates that may help to resolve FireWire issues. Search the Apple Software Updates Web site for relevant updates. Isolate the device. Another device on the chain may be interfering with the backup device's communication. If your backup device is connected to your computer through a hub or another FireWire device, unplug it and connect it directly to a port on the computer. If it is already connected directly to the computer, try changing ports. If the problem persists, do not reconnect the other devices, and continue down the checklist. You may have a bad cable. Replace the cable that connects the device to the computer. Update or reinstall the FireWire adapter drivers and/or firmware. Corrupt drivers can cause issues that may not be otherwise detectable. Check the manufacturer's or vendor's website for updated drivers. Completely uninstall any other third-party backup software that may be on your machine, including any drivers that software may have loaded for the device. The system board or FireWire adapter in the computer may be having a problem. Install Retrospect on another computer, if available, and try the device there as the only device. The device itself may be defective. If you have implemented all of the preceding steps and get failures on new media after changing media, cables, software, firmware and computers, then the backup device, being the only factor that has not changed, is the the last variable. Contact your drive vendor for further diagnostics, tests, or to inquire about repair or replacement.
