Freecom Portable 8432 drive

Recommended Posts

I have been trying out Retrospect 4.3/MacOS 9.1 with a Freecom Portable 8*4*32

drive, FireWire connection. The Devices menu recognises the drive OK as Philips

CD-RW, and the backup process appears to run normally (acting just the same as

when backing up to a Jaz disc) until it gets to the verification stage, at which point

there are numerous 'Bad backup set header found (0x781c8306 at 70,315)' type

messages. What is the problem here -- is the CD-writer's software faulty, as you have

reported with some other drives?

You are right, it is not supported at present (sorry not to have mentioned this before). So I'd like to know whether the non-support is because the drive has been tested and found not up to standard, or just because it has never been tested at all.

Dantz goes through a rigorous qualification process with every drive we test. This means that not every drive will be qualified and we can never guarantee that a particular device will be supported. We cannot say if they failed qualification or if it's still in testing.

Oh! Dantz hasn't always been so coy about disclosing whether a particular drive failed their testing. See for example knowledgebase item #141:

KB> Teac CD-R55S unsupported

Unfortunately, we were not able to qualify the Teac CDR55S for use with Retrospect. This drive does not fully support packet writing, which is required for a drive to be qualified for use with Retrospect.

cogito> or again, item #142:

KB> Sanyo CD-R800S unsupported

While we originally had every intention of supporting the Sanyo CDR-R800S drive, we ultimately were not able to qualify it for use with Retrospect or Retrospect Express.

Unfortunately, we ran into complications in testing the drive which we were not able to resolve with Sanyo. With its current firmware, the drive does not fully support all the functions of packet writing--the method Retrospect and Retrospect Express use to write to CD-R and CD-RW drives--that we require to qualify drives. Unfortunately, this drive will never be supported for use with Retrospect or Retrospect Express.

cogito> If a difficulty is discovered with a particular drive, surely users of your technology should have the right to know about it?
