Problem to configure backup

Recommended Posts

Hallo together,

is there anybody who can help me to solve the described problem:

First my enviroment:

I´ve got 3 Macintosh Clients Mac OS X 10.3.9 and 10.4 and one

Macintosh where Retrospect (the second last) run and all the backups are stored.

My backup-plan

Every Monday at 7:00 pm should start a full backup of Macintosh-Client 1 into the backup-set named client1-week1.

After this has ended (9:45 pm), the Macintosh-Client 2 should start a full backup into the backup-set named client2-week1.

After this the last full backup should start (1:15 am) from the 3rd Macintosh Client into the backup-set named client3-week1.

From Thuesday until Friday should start a incrementell backup into the corresponding backup-sets.

The next Monday at 7:00 pm should start a full backup of Macintosh-Client 1 into the backup-set named client1-week2.

After this has ended (9:45 pm), the Macintosh-Client 2 should start a full backup into the backup-set named client2-week2.

After this the last full backup should start (1:15 am) from the 3rd Macintosh Client into the backup-set named client3-week2.

From Thuesday until Friday should start a incrementell backup into the corresponding backup-sets.

And so on....

That means every Client got for every week his own backup-set. It´s clear that this is not a real backup, its a mix between backup and archive.

How can I realise this, how can I do it?

May be anyone can send me screenshots or the corresponding files.

Hope you understand my problem and my english.

With best regards from germany

petsto

You can achieve what you want, except for the naming of the backup sets, by performing a New Media backup each Monday.

You will need to create 3 backup sets, one for each client. You would then write a separate backup script for each client, using the appropriate backup set as the destination. You should schedule a New Media backup to run each Monday, and a Normal (incremental) backup for the remainder of the week. You can schedule each backup to run at the specific times you list above, if that's what you really want to do. However, if you don't really care what time each backup should start, you can schedule them all at the same time and let Retrospect run them one after the other in the order it likes. Or, if you want the backups to run in a specific order, you can schedule them to start one minute apart and Retrospect will start the next backup when the previous one has finished.

Each Monday, you would make fresh, blank media available for each backup set. Retrospect will then automatically create a new backup set using a sequence number one higher than the previous backup set with the same name. Your script will automatically change to start using this new backup set for the next nights' incremental backups, and you would be able to archive the previous week's backup sets.

For example, suppose you have created a backup set called "Client 1 Backup." The first piece of media (tape, CD, etc.) used to back up to this backup set would be called "1-Client 1 Backup." (If that media member fills up, subsequent members would be named "2-Client 1 Backup," "3-Client 1 Backup," etc.) The following Monday when you have scheduled a New Media backup, Retrospect will create the new backup set called "Client 1 Backup [001]" and the first piece of blank media will be named "1-Client 1 Backup [001]." This new backup set will then be used until the next New Media backup, at which point Retrospect will create backup set "Client 1 Backup [002]," and so on.

This is a brief description of how to do this. If you need more information, please tell us a bit more about your setup, including what type of backup set you are planning to use (that is, what kind of media you will be writing to).
