Mac always hangs during duplicate

Recommended Posts

Retrospect Desktop Version: 6.1.126

Device Access Version: 1.0.107

RDU Version: 6.1.12.101

Mac OS X Version: 10.4.10 (German)

Mac: Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5

Memory: 4 GB DDR SDRAM

Backup Medium: Western Digital My Book 750 GB, partitioned with 2 partitions, connected to the Mac via FW800. The first has 250 GB for the startup disk duplicate and the second has 500 GB for the backup of the data.

Additional hardware: Intuos3 Wacom tablet

I want to make a duplicate of my startup disk on a partition of an external FireWire hard disk. I tried three times. However, my Mac always freezes during the process. To be more precise, the mouse can be moved. However, the Mac does not react in any way to clicks. Cmd-Alt-Esc does not do anything. The fan does not kick in. It does not look like the CPU is used much.

I have turned off the screen saver, because I found out that it slows down Retrospect considerably. Instead I turned on the energy saver for the monitor. I set it to 1 minute. Even when the Mac hangs the energy saver works, i.e. the display turns black, but it can be turned on by pressing the Shift key or moving th mouse. After a long while the mouse pointer cannot be moved anymore, though.

Connecting via Apple Remote Desktop does not work. I cannot ping the computer anymore. I cannot reach it remotely using ssh.

The three freezes did not occur at the same time. The first freeze happened shortly after Retrospect began copying the files. The second freeze happened before it had started copying, and the third one after 70% had been copied. So it seems to me it has nothing to do with a certain source directory or file.

Here is what I did before the last try:

- I ran Software Update to make sure the system software is up to date.

- I checked the source and the target disk with Disk Utility's First Aid function. None of them had any errors. The target volume has 250 GB. The source disk uses 190 GB of data right now.

- I deleted the target volume using Disk Utility.

- I made sure that "Ignore Ownership on this volume" was unchecked.

- I excluded the target volumes from Spotlight search.

Some additional comments which might or might not be relevant:

- I am pretty certain that only Retrospect and Activity Monitor were running.

- Backup on the 500 GB partition, which I did before, went through without problems.

- I checked the Console for errors but found nothing which I could relate to the freezes.

- The retrospect protocol shows no error. Here is the latest entry:

- 06.10.2007 22:43:30 Uhr: Kopieren von TigerG5…

After the latest freeze I ran the extensive Apple Hardware Test. It showed no problems at all.

I must admit that at that point I have ran out of ideas what to try else. Any help is greatly appreciated!

To be clear, Duplicate is a different operation then Backup with Retrospect. So in the situation where it works without error, please confirm exacdtly what you are doing.

While Retrospect Duplication is a powerful, scriptable and useful feature of the program, there are also some other excellent duplication tools for OS X.

I would suggest trying to do the same thing with a program such as SuperDuper! or CarbonCopyCloner. This might help to discover if you're experiencing some sort of hardware induced hang, or if it is ineed a Retrospect caused problem.

Thanks for the very fast response!

Yes, I was referring to the Retrospect Backup and Duplicate operations. The Retrospect Backup operation to the 500 GB partition worked without a problem yesterday. I backed up three folders, one of them being a user's Documents folder, totalling 75 GB after compression. See the extract of the Retrospect protocol below. You will notice that I had not yet updated to the latest RDU. I only did that after the first freeze.

The Duplicate operation of the startup disk to the 250 GB partition on the other hand did not succeed because of the freezes.

I will try your suggestion and give you feedback about how it goes.

Many people are reporting issues with the MyBook, specifically that it cannot stand a continuous pounding as happens with Retrospect. The MyBook seems to be designed for light-duty use, and has thermal issues when in continuous-duty use.

A "duplicate" is not a backup. A duplicate is just a copy of files, without earlier versions, etc. Retrospect is good for backups, but really is not the right tool for "duplicates".

If what you are trying to do is to make a bootable "duplicate" (copy / clone) of your startup disk, I suggest that you use SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner 3.0. Both are free, and are better tools for that job. Either can be found by a quick Google search.
