MacWizatBDG
Well I have the "Server" edition. I'm on my 3rd try at backing up my server. So far seems its starts fine then 5 goes away. I think things are fine but when I look at the back up sets seems nothing got backed up even though it started off with all this stuff it said needed backing up. Hmmmmmmm. MacWizatBDG
Well still no backup of my server. It goes and goes but at some point it just goes away. the log of the backup never shows a completion of the backup. And the backup sets show no usage. Now I'm getting worried! Where did I put that v4.3 again?! Does any one have a clue whats going on? Anything you want to ask me about setups just go ahead and ask!
shadowspawn
> Anything you want to ask me about setups just go ahead and ask! OK. :-) What does the log show? (Copy and paste) What are you backing up? (Local disks, mounted disks, or a client?) What sort of media are you backing up to? (tape? file set?) What backup device, including model? If using a SCSI device, what SCSI card are you using?
CallMeDave
In reply to: Anything you want to ask me about setups just go ahead and ask! OK. Question: Why don't you include lots and lots of relevant information in your first posts, instead of inviting others to think up questions? Try turning on OS X's built-in crash reporter from the Preferences window of the Console application (in /Applications/Utilities/). See if you get a crash log from that. MacWizatBDG
Log shows just seems to stop, no mention of completion of the process. Backing up a client that happens to be a data server. Using an APS Technologies AIT drive the basic model. Its SCSI and I'm using a Adaptec 29160 card. All this is on a Dual processor 800 mhz desktop with 1G of ram. OS is 10.1.5 (5566) I rebuilt the tape from yesterday and started to back up again to it. But the back up seemed to just stop. I'm debating a force quit but I've got a few other things on my plate at the moment.
MacWizatBDG
Gee Dave, I'm in a brave new world here. I've been using OS X since it came out. Never quite seen anything like what 5 is doing. And in the 20 years I've been working with systems, every tech support situation someone always asks you for what you didn't tell them the first time. Figured folks would ask me what is relevant in their minds not mine. Seems to be how it always works out. And I looked at the crash record and didn't see anything that remotely looked like retrospect log or mention of retrospect.
CallMeDave
In reply to: And I looked at the crash record and didn't see anything that remotely looked like retrospect log or mention of retrospect Retrospect uses Apple's "LaunchCFMApp" to run as a Carbon application under Mac OS X. If you set CrashReporter to automatically display logs, you'll see it come up if Retrospect crashes. If you do get a LaunchCFMApp log, you should post it here. shadowspawn
1) I'm not clear, does Retrospect disappear, or does it become unresponsive? (i.e. it is crashing, or is it hanging?) 2) The Adaptec 29160 has a known issue with wide SCSI devices. I'm not familiar with the AIT drive, do you have a 50 pin SCSI connection on the drive or a 68 pin SCSI connection? (The simplest rule is to use a supported card with the same style connector as the drive.) http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=osx_scsi_adapter 3) The Console utility lets you turn on crash logging, as Dave mentioned. Launch Console, open Preference, switch to the Crashes tab, and turn on both options (log crashes and automatically display them). Leave Console running and if Retrospect crashes, Console will make this apparent by opening the crash log. 4) If Retrospect hangs (rather than crashing), two things to check, both of which I have experienced first hand: a) Is there a Net Retry dialog up? (Hide or close all the windows that don't belong to Retrospect so you can see whether it is hiding somewhere!) Is Retrospect (masquerading as LaunchCFMApp) burning the CPU? In Terminal, type "top -u" and see whether there is a process using the majority of the CPU. 5) Mainly for interest because I don't know, what is a "data server"? :-)
