xtopher
I'm using Retrospect 5.0205 on OSX 10.1.5 backing up the network with the DVD drive on my G4 dual-1gig. I wasn't sure if I could write sessions to a DVD-R, but I tried it and it worked, backing up the next day using the same disk as the day before. When that disk (#3) filled up, Retrospect asked for a new disk. I put one in and got a generic "drive reported dirty heads, etc." and kicked the disk out. Now when I run Retrospect, it asks for disk 4, I put in the one that got kicked out, Retro id's it as disk 4 and says it can't erase the disk. Three questions: 1. Does Retro write sessions to DVDs, or does it just think it's writing another session. 2. The disk it named #4 and then rejected doesn't appear in the Finder; is it hosed? 3. Will another DVD disk work? Understandably, I'm reluctant to play $5 slot machines seeing what will happen next.
Guest
Retrospect doesn't ever "close out" the DVD, so it will write as many sessions as needed to fill the medium. Can you erase the DVD fron within Retrospect? It's normal for the medium to not show up in the Finder; that's just because Retrospect doesn't finalize the disc. When it's asking for a new disc, is it asking you to insert the 4th disc? Or is it asking you to insert a new disc that will be named 4-[backup set name]? If you go to Configure > Backup Sets and then select your set, does the Members tab show that there is a 4th disc in that set? If so, try marking that one as "missing" and then using another disc.
