Updating 4.2 to 5.1 or 6.1 for OSX?

Recommended Posts

Been using OS9 and 4.2 for eons without problems...

Got the update for OSX (5.1 and 6.1 on same disk....)

5.1 will let me update the catalogs....6.1 won't....and I KNOW that that is because the catalog format was changed for 6.0+

My Question(s):

1) Is there a migrator somewhere that will allow me to update the pre6 catalog sets for writing in 6.1 ??

I WONT be recreating from media sets if that's the suggestion --- way too much data tapes to warrant that.....

2) With the assuption that there isn't a migration util....is it gonna be suicide if i decide to use 5.1 on OSX to keep my existing catalog updateable.....then I'll do 6.1 after the year closes out and start fresh with a new set...(we do a few YEARLY A/B/C storage/tape sets on our server.....the server is wiped Jan1st each year, then we start fresh (jobs for a commercial print shop)

(OSx 10.4.10 on g3/400 - SCSI AIT-2 )

Thanks for any answers on this.... dohgrem.gif

No. 6.1 will be able to read the old catalogs, but you won't be able to write to those backup sets.

I wouldn't advise using 5.1 with OS X for two reasons:

(1) 5.1 was/is very buggy with OS X, and you are using MacOS 10.4.10; there was/is a BIG difference between MacOS 10.1,2,3 and Mac OS 10.4.x, so you are even in for bigger issues, because Retrospect 5.1 wasn't in existence for Mac OS 10.4. That's why we skipped 5.1, waited for 6.x to migrate to Retrospect on OS X. But hey, it's your data. Are you feeling lucky?

(2) 5.1 can't back up OS X metadata. 6.1 does a better job (still not perfect for ACLs, but better).

Tapes are cheap compared to the value of your data. Why not just start new backup set(s) now? That's really the right thing to do with such a big change.

Just my suggestion.

By "update the catalogs" I presume you mean add data to the Backup Set?

The changes made in version 6.0 were to how Retrospect stores data on the media, not changes to the catalog format per se. So there is nothing you can do to the catalog file to change the fact that you cannot write additional data to the media (tapes) of pre-6.0.x Backup Sets. You can read the data, and Restore files, but you can't perform backups using them.

The change was to allow for more then 1,000 GB in a Backup Set; there was no way to do this without making the change.

Dantz/EMC/EMCInsignia stopped testing Retrospect 5.1.x long before Apple shipped Mac OS X 10.4.10. So you would be using software that's unqualified by its publishers for use on your operating system. For some, that might be suicide (for example, if you had an internal IT policy that precluded this sort of thing).

But as with _any_ critical hardware/software change, tests should be run in advance to assertian that it will work for you. That way you won't be surprised by anything that fails, and you will still have your existing solution in place and running.

That being said, I wouldn't recommend 5.1.x on 10.4.x, especially with SCSI (for which you omit the make/model of the host adapter you are using).

It's too late for you to have done this on Jan 1 of _this_ year, so I'd suggest qualifying 6.1 on your hardware, and then putting your current tapes on a shelf, and start fresh Backup Sets. Or continue with the hardware/software you had been using, and putting your OS X/6.1 migration off until you're ready to go live on Jan 1 of next year.

BTW - it is an Adpatec 29160 SCSI-2 contoller - connected to a SONY SDX-D500C AIT-2 tape drive

Um, I think that Adaptec dropped support AFTER 10.3.9; I think this should be "is not compatible with 10.4 or later."

You would need to get an ATTO SCSI Card to use the tape drive.

Agreed.

Actually the last Adaptec drivers shipped with 10.2.8. We will not support a tape drive with that card and any later systems.

My error, Robin is right, of course. That's what I get for typing from memory. When you get old, you will understand.

Here's the KB article with the list of supported cards for various Mac OS versions, including a link to the Adaptec note where they announced that they had abandoned the Macintosh platform:

Supported HBA cards
