Can't access backup set <name> error -1101 (file/directory not found)

I have this problem on multiple machines running Retrospect Express v7.0, with HP DVD drives supplied bundled together. When I leave the launcher running to auto-launch a scheduled backup I get the above error. However if Retrospect is running at the scheduled backup time it all works fine. Once the launcher has caused the error, Retrospect Configure>Devices reports "No CD/DVD storage devices found". I have to close Launcher and Retrospect, and then open Retrospect again and my device is once again available.

Basically the problem is that while Launcher is running, there is no device. I've reinstalled retrospect, I've created new backup sets and scripts, I'm stuck. Please help.
