Missing backups & assertion failures

I've just upgraded Retrospect Express HD to ver. 1.1.


I'm having issues where it does not seem to recognize all of the existing backups. I followed the directions on Maxtor's website, telling me to remove all of the .rbc files (I had about 5 of them). When I launch Retrospect, I'm now getting assertion failure errors and the catalog is not being rebuilt.


I reported the issue to Maxtor with no resolution. After finally getting to a live person, they explained that I should only have one .rbc file, one RestorePoint directory, and one 1-RestorePoint directory. I have several of these files and directories. They have basically told me I need to delete all of the backups and start over again. This seems like a poor solution.


How am I supposed to count on having backups if I can't get to them? Can I ever trust Retrospect again?


So, does anyone have any other suggestions to recover the backups?
