External HDD Error v 5.6.127

Recommended Posts

Using Retrospect Server 5.6.127 on (Windows 2000 SP4) Backup Server machine, which calls out to clients nightly for a Disk to Disk backup. This has been working reliably for about 2 years.

I recently installed a LaCie 250GB HDD (Firewire). I configured the backup to call out to various clients and start backing up everything from the main server, and three laptops to the new external HDD - all disks are NTFS (I had to reformat the LaCie 250 GB after receiving 2GB limits last night). I intend to use this new HDD as off site storage.

I never get that far. Retrospect has the following errors when the compare begins:

The last client listed above will diplay the same error when it comes time to compare.

I understand that the -1020 represents open files.

Any ideas?

Sean.

Hi Sean,

It looks like the data Retrospect is recieving from the client is not usable, possibly corrupt. If this client has been backing up for two years and suddenly the backups begin to fail due to unusable network data, my first suspicion would be faulty hardware. If you have a spare NIC lying around, I would suggest installing it, disabling the old NIC if it can't be uninstalled, and forget/add the client again. - Just an idea.

Thanks,

However, I was unclear in my previous post. For the past two years I have been reliably backing up to my laptop. I take it home with me every night, and it works as a poor-man's offsite storage. As you can imagine, my HDD on the laptop is almost full. The LaCie drive is portable, and I bought this to alleviate the problem.

I want to back up to the LaCie drive in lieu of my laptop and take the portable HDD home with me at nights.

The LaCie drive is the one having the problems with compare, although it appears to write the backup reliably.

I am using an Adaptec Fire wire adapter (new) and the LaCie Drive. These two items are the only changes that I made to a previously reliable system.

The NIC's are the same, so I think that they are working as they have been.

Any ideas on where to start checking?

Can you confirm that the 5.6 version will work with this setup?

Thanks.
