Retrospect 5.5 not recognising SCSI HP9200i CDRW

Recommended Posts

I have installed Retrospect 5.5 on a NT4 Server running SP6a, with SCSI RAID controller and SCSI HP 9200 CDRW on different SCSI channels. After installing and running 5.5, I get an error "Retrospect cannot use :HP CD-RW, ID 1:4 because it does not have a drive letter assigned."

I have searched through the "Support and Hardware" section and found the "Retrospect for wIndows reports "the drive can't be used because no drive letter is assigned" for CDR drive that has an assigned drive letter."

Tried all the suggestions, but with no success. Anyone out there encountered similar problems?

Retrospect for Windows reports "the drive can't be used because no drive letter is assigned" for a CD-R drive that has an assigned drive letter.

"Retrospect can not access your CD-RW because no Drive Letter is assigned"

1. First, check "My Computer" to ensure that the drive does have a drive

letter assigned.

2. Ensure that you are logged in as Administrator.

3. Under Windows NT, XP or 2000, if the ATAPI miniport driver is disabled

Retrospect will not see the ATAPI bus. You must enable the miniport driver

by editing the registry key at the path:

\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\

CurrentControlSet\Services\Aspi32\Parameters

Set the ExcludeMiniports value data to empty so Retrospect sees all buses.

4. Ensure that ASPI, the utility that Retrospect uses to communicate with

devices, is installed correctly. Run ASPICHK (in the Retrospect Program

Files folder) to make sure ASPI is "green" and all components are at version

4.60. If not, try a reinstall (ASPIINST.exe).

5. If this is Windows 2000 or NT, enable NT SCSI Passthrough to bypass ASPI:

From the Retrospect Directory hit Ctrl-Alt-P-P. Under "Execution," check

"Enable NT SCSI Passthrough." Click OK. Quit and relaunch.

6. If running Windows 2000, upgrade to the latest Service Pack.

7. Make sure that the device is set to be "master" on its IDE channel, not

"slave" or "cable select". Many CD writers do not function well if they are

not configured as the master device.

8. Try *temporarily* uninstalling any other CD-writing utilities, in case

extraneous drivers are conflicting with Retrospect. <Do we want to put in

info on how to disable directCD? Or maybe tell them to search the

Knowledgebase for direct CD?

  • 5 years later...

All of a sudden I get this error message when starting up Retrospect 7.5 ( latest)

WinXP SP2

I am using a Plextor 716A ATA DVD/RW Drive... ( have used it for 2 years with Retrospect)

*** For all other Drive uses & functions ... it is recognized with a Drive Letter ... and in

The 'Windows Admin Management' program ... it is recognized and the Drive Letter

is assigned properly.

When I subsituted it for a standard DVD Drive ( not a ATA) ... no problems reported

I reloaded an older version of Retrospect ( 7.3--) ... still the problem of recognition

*** This is the error .... "Retrospect cannot use: Plextor DVD DL 1:1:0 because it does

not have a drive letter assigned"

I have searched through the "Support and Hardware" section and have not found the

"Retrospect for wIndows reports "the drive can't be used because no drive letter is

assigned" for CDR drive that has an assigned drive letter."

I am quite burdened down by this mystery problem. Especially since in other programs

it works fine...

I did make sure that the registry entry "exclude miniports" were set to 'null value'.

( \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM.......................\Aspi32\Parameters )

*** Also, I ran the Retrospect Utility called "ASPICHK" ... all returns were GREEN

with version 4.6 showing.

Any help would be gladly accepted !

Thank you for your courtesy
