rpgraphics
Hi, I am so frustrated, as I have waisted 10 DVD-Rs trying to transfer my Retrospect archive from HD to DVD. Any help would be immensely appreciated. Here's some info (maybe more than you need, but...): • PowerMac MDD Dual 1.25 running OS X 10.3.5 • Retrospect Desktop 5.1.175 with RDU 4.3.103 I upgraded everything a year ago. Moved from a PowerTower 225 with DDS-2 archives to my current system and transfered everything from DDS to HD. I then transfered a portion of that to DVD-R. Currently, there are 5 backup sets in the archive: pre-2000 (DVD), 2000 (HD), 2001 (HD), 2002 (HD), 2003 (HD). The DVD-R backup set consists of 22 Apple branded DVD-Rs. The first 2 came with the system and are 4x. #3-21 are 2x. #22 was also 2x, but Retrospect had an error when I recently tried to add to it, so I had to discard it, recatalog, and make a new #22 with a new 4x disc. I have verified them and they are all fine. BUT--I have since gone through 10 DVD-Rs, trying to add to this archive, and now I have 10 coasters. I keep getting write errors. I have tried breaking the transfers down into smaller segments in hope this would help, but eventually I get a -206 error followed by "Backup set format inconsistency" errors when verifying. In fact the verification just goes on and on and on once it hits an error. HELP! Could this have something to do with the speed of the DVD-Rs? Since the first 2 members (and the last one) are 4x and worked without problems, I wouldn't think so. I know the Pioneer DVR-105/a05 is made for 4x. I don't know what else it could be. Apple doesn't even sell the 2x DVD-Rs anymore. Would changing the "Set Write Speed" make a difference? If so, is that only applied to DVD burning? It wouldn't slow down my backups to HD, would it? As I said, ANY suggestions would be welcome. I am running out of room on my HD and need to get this transfered to DVD to free up space ASAP. Thanks. Alan Cook
Hi I see your post was a little while ago. I have the same problems with my set-up --identical to yours. Any solutions yet? I stopped after two dud attempts. Retrospect seemed to want to carry on as if the previous disk was fine, instead of re-attempting from the beginning. I'm presently downloading v6.0.204, current version is v6.0.193. I'm hoping the upgrade will make a difference. Why can't we write (back-up) to disk in segments set at say 4.2G? That way we can then write them to DVD with Toast at the best speed?
rpgraphics
No--no solutions yet. I have tried everything I can think of. I have scoured this forum, Googled, everything. I am able to burn to DVD just fine from the Finder, iDVD, etc. Just not Retrospect. Last night I thought maybe it would make some difference to try it from Mac OS 9 instead. Came in this morning and found it stalled at 2.4 GB. This time it didn't even spit the DVD-R out--it was just stalled out. This is so infuriating. I have been a fan of Retrospect since 1995. I upgraded to 5.1 when I ordered this Mac with a SuperDrive (Pioneer 105). The only reason I ordered the drive was for use with Retrospect. And now it seems like such a waste. I am at the end of my rope. I was hoping someone from Dantz would see this post and chime in.
rpgraphics
Hi, Alan. I already tried the v6 demo, but I still got the same results. So I'm back on 5.1 for now. Writing to 4.2 GB segments would defeat the whole purpose of using Retrospect to archive (for me anyway). I did not have to resort to something like that for DDS tapes, so why should we have to for DVD-R? It is supposed to work for DVD-R. That is why I upgraded and bought a SuperDrive in the first place. (I'm sorry if I sound angry, but this is really getting me frustrated.) I'll post back if this ever gets resolved. Thanks for your response. Quote: ... natew
Hi Have you ever run the drive configuration wizard on this drive? If so can you explain why? (i.e. were you having trouble with the drive?) You are for sure using dvd-R media right? Not dvd+R as that is not supported. What is the brand name of the discs that are giving you trouble? Have you tried different brands? Thanks Nate
rpgraphics
Hi, Nate. Thanks for the message. I did try the custom configuration a while back to see if it made any difference (even though the 105 is supposed to be supported). Same results. I am using DVD-Rs, not DVD+Rs. I have tried Apple, Maxell, Fuji, Memorex. Apple just sent me a new drive. I tried transferring my archive again from HD to DVD-R. And again I got a "dirty heads..." message at about 2.8GB into it. Any ideas? Rick
natew
Hi Just to make sure: Remove any .rdi files from the Retropsect program folder and the Retrospect preferences folder. Then install the latest version of Retrospect 5.1 and the corresponding driver update. Thanks Nate
rpgraphics
I checked for .rdi files, but I no longer have any, since I switched back to the standard device driver that's supposed to support the 105. I also reinstalled Retrospect as you suggested. Same results. I downloaded the demo version of Retrospect 6, and that gave me the same errors. I received a followup phone call about the demo from Dantz, and I told the rep. about the errors on both 5.1 and 6, so she opened a support case for me and transfered me over. But I got disconnected. Today I spoke to a phone tech. support rep., but he didn't really do much. He said it might be the drive. I told him Apple replaced the drive (same model). I told him I've used only top brand media--Apple, Maxell, Fuji... all with the same results. Apple replaced the media that failed, but now I don't think it was a media error, since I get the same errors with all brands. Again, everything works fine in iDVD, Finder, etc. It's just with Retrospect that I experience errors. This was a supported drive according to the website--that is why I requested it from Apple when I purchased the G4. What am I supposed to do now? Any help is appreciated. natew
Hi You mentioned Apple sent you a new drive. Did you install it yourself? Did you see any kinks or bends in the cable? Are there any other devices attached to the IDE cable the DVD drive is on? FWIW Retrospect has to do some things other burning programs don't. As a result it is more sensitive to communication problems and drive failures. Thanks Nate
