heybrian
I'm in a prepress shop, backing up a 1 Terrabyte Dell server (Win2K). Retrospect runs on a Mac (OS X), backing up to a single DLT tape drive. Since we put OS X on the mac, our backups have gaping holes in them. For example, I ran a complete backup yesterday, and when I search for backed up files, I find whole folders missing from the backup! This seems to have started with OS X, (like so many of my troubles...) Retrospect does not warn me that anything is wrong... natew
Hi Are you restoring using a snapshot or are you searching for folders by name? Try restoring from snapshots first. Are you using the "all files" selector in your backup? Retrospect just doesn't miss files - this problem is likely caused by the backup settings. Thanks Nate
heybrian
Hi Nate, thanks for your reply. To clarify: I am searching for files and/or folders by name as opposed to snapshots (never used snapshots in my experience, I've always just needed a file picked up here and there...) I'll try snapshots, though I'm not familiar with their operation... Yes, I'm using the 'all files' selector, and no other conditions that would exclude anything... The strange thing is that my scripts and backup settings have not changed for a couple years, and everything was backing up until a couple weeks ago when we went from OS 9 to OS X on the backup/archive mac. Example: there's a folder on my server full of page files with consecutive names. It will back up the file called page2.eps, but NOT the file called page1.eps (even if both are changed or replaced.) The script is nothing special, it just backs up everything in a particular folder on the server. (Are there limitations to how much that folder can have in it? It's about 600 GB (print files, you know...) Thanks again, Nate... Any further help is appreciated. We're getting Retrospect 6 next week, I'll keep you posted. heybrian
OK, here's an update that might save other people some trouble. It seems my problem has something to do with OS X and Win2K permissions. It doesn't want to back up files that were created by users with more permissions than the Retrospect station. If I reboot the Retrospect machine and log on as admin, it starts seeing all kinds of files that it couldn't see before. So, it seems Retrospect does miss some files, at least in some circumstances. If anyone from Dantz is listening, here's an idea: Can we get a warning that it won't back up admin files? Like a little window that says "There are 8,786 files here that Retrospect won't back up because you don't have more permissions than the creator..." That would be so nice to know... Thanks again, Nate, for your reply.
natew
Hi Are you using file sharing or Retrospect client to backup these files? If you are using file sharing you need to set up Retrospect to automount the volume. The log in settings for the volume are key. If the user that mounted the volume does not have full access to the share then Retrospect won't either. Nate
