Guest
I have gone through the complete process to produce a valid image for system recovery and my system won't boot from the CD. I can boot from other CDs OK. I used the B's Recorder Gold that was bundled with my SONY CD-RW to copy the boot image to the CD after it was created by Retrospect. What else do I need to do to make a valid bootable CD for recovery purposes?
dmj99
I hope this doesn't sound silly, but did you change your system BIOS to put the CDROM first in the boot sequence? Don
IrenaS
To use the Retrospect bootable Disaster Recovery CD, you must make sure of the following: 1. Your computer must be able to boot from a CD. Most newer model computers have this ability, but some older computers cannot. If you have a bootable CD (such as a bootable Windows install CD) try booting from this. There may also be technical specs for your computer available from the manufacturer that have this information. If your Disaster Recovery CD was created with Windows 2000, you need to make sure your PC is able to boot from a Windows 2000 CD. The Microsoft Windows 2000 Install CD is often bootable, and can be used to test boot capability on your computer. 2. You may need to change your BIOS so to enable the option to boot from CD. To do this, enter the BIOS when starting your computer (usually by hitting F2 during startup). Change the boot order so that the option to boot from CD comes before other boot options. 3. You should look at your DR CD in Windows Explorer to ensure that it was created correctly. If the CD shows one file, with a name like "Restore My Computer.iso" this means that the CD wasn't created correctly. You must create a CD using this image instead of just burning that image file to a CD. In many cases, just double-clicking the image file will do this. For B's Recorder Gold, the Readme file says: B's Recorder GOLD (B.H.A.): Start B's Recorder GOLD and close or cancel any assistant or wizard that appears. In the main window, drag the disaster recovery ISO image to the lowest of the three panes (which says it accepts Image files). Click Record at the top of the window to start burning the CD. snhanson
I can't boot from the Disaster Recovery CD that Retrospect Express 5.6.132 has created. I have reviewed performed the steps suggested before: - I can boot from the CD-Rom drive using the Dell Product Recovery CD, Windows 2000, that came with my PC. No problem. - I've checked that the CD being created contains several files, not the whole *.ISO file. My CD conatains: D:\>dir Volume in drive D is Retro_DR Volume Serial Number is CBAF-6D2B Directory of D:\ 05/01/2002 07:15p 0 CDROM_IP.5 05/01/2002 12:15p 05/01/2002 12:15p 05/01/2002 07:13p 4,870 READ ME.TXT 05/01/2002 07:15p 2 RETRO.DR 3 File(s) 4,872 bytes 2 Dir(s) 0 bytes free D:\>attrib R D:\CDROM_IP.5 R D:\READ ME.TXT R D:\RETRO.DR When I look at my Dell Product Recovery CD, it contains a boot partition: D:\>attrib R D:\AUTORUN.INF R D:\CDROM_IP.5 R D:\CDROM_NT.5 R D:\READ1ST.TXT R D:\README.DOC R D:\SETUP.EXE HR D:\__TABLE_.SYS I used Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.05 to burn the contents of my *.ISO file onto the CD. Just to make sure, I've burnt 3 copies of the CD now. None of them contain a boot partition. What do you suggest? dimprov
Try Nero for burning an iso to see if it helps. It works for me.
IanWorthington
I'm not sure, I've never tried this, but that root directoty of your CDR doesn't look right to me. Can you find a tool to mount the ISO image online (such as daemon-tools) and see what the ISO image contains in its root. At least that way you'll know where the problem is. Ian ... 36548
I used Roxio CD Creator Ver.4.02 and followed Dantz procedure on topic and it worked the first time. I booted system from this CD/R to check it out and it came up as advertised. Hope this helps.
