Using seperate slots in autoloader

Recommended Posts

I've recently inherited the duties of the mac support person who left the company. Its been a very long time since I touched retrospect, those I worked on were not connected to a autoloader. We currently have v6.0.212 on a 1ghz xserve connected to a HP LTO2 (8)Tape autoloader. The past person seems to have just pushed a bunch of tapes in and let them go.

I've searched the pdf and online and have most likely missed this but I would like to be able to insert 8 tapes and have 4 of them for a full backup one day, and the other 4 cover differentials the other 4 days of the work week.

I work with Backup Exec on Netware where you can define slots as singles or a group. All slots are visible in the storage devices screen, but how do I assign a backup set(or a job) to just a single slot or a group of slots?

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike,

The first rule of Retrospect is: Retrospect is not Backup Exec.

There is no way to define specific slots for specific duties, and you won't find any differential backup options.

What you can do is predefine tapes to a backup set, though this isn't absolutely necessary and you could allow Retrospect to "automatically use blank media" to get the job done. Set the first backup of the week to recycle (I'm assuming here that you will be rotating between sets of tapes) and then set your script action to "new member" for the rest of the week, which would ask for a new tape to write to every day.

I know this isn't exactly what you were looking for, but hopefully this will point you in the right direction. Feel free to keep posting questions and I'll see what I can do to answer them for you. Switching from Backup Exec to Retrospect has been a difficult transition for everyone I've talked to.

Also, Retrospect 6.1.126 is a free update to anyone with 6.0.X. You can get it here:
