Retrospect cannot write to DVD because it is in use.

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My machine:

running OS X 10.4.4 Server on a G4 867 MHz with 1.5 GB RAM. DVD-Drive (internal) is a Pioneer DVD-RW 106 D and Retrospect is Workgroup 6.1.126, Driver-Update is 6.1.2.102.

my problems:

Retrospect cannot write to an existing DVD-Set after my Mac is running for more than 6 hours. Retrospect says "The disc is write protected...". Hmm, when I quit Retrospect and want to eject that DVD the OS does not allow me to eject it. When I doubleclick on the DVD, strange things happen like, sometimes opens a picture (or any file on my server) and not the DVD itself.

Retrospect does not have any problem if I restart my Mac and start the backup, everyhting works as it should, but if I leave my Mac on overnight there is the problem on the next day as I described.

I have setup this machine from scratch over the holidays and nothing has changed.

thanks

Rob

I'd suggest removing the File System Plugin kext files, and see if that makes a difference.

I'm not sure exactly what the names of the files are, so one way would be to use the Retrospect installer to uninstall (making sure to _not_ uninstall your preference file, which you should probably have a copy of anyway), then restart, then do a custom install of just the application (no need to restart again since you didn't install any system files).

Please report back; this is interesting.

I will test removing the files you said. In the meantime I have nailed down the problem to Retrospect. As long as there is no backup made, the DVD (which stays as long in the drive til its full) is full accessible. (Opening the drive brings up the Retrospect textinfo. When it is automatic backuping at 10 am and the backup is finished the DVD becomes inaccessible.

I will post with my investigations.

thanks

any help appreciated.

Rob
