Ronaldo
Yesterday created a new backup set of 13 CD discs an a LaCie USB drive. Everything fine, no errors. Actually created two backup sets with no hitches. Today attempted to back up to that set again. Retrospect asked for disc 13. (Incidentally, it took 35 minutes from the time I started the backup to when a disc was asked for!) After working with disc 13, Retrospect asked for a new disc to be named 14. An empty CD disc, from the same batch as the other 13, was inserted into the drive. After clicking the "Proceed" button I got this message: "This disc cannot be added to this backup set. It is too different from the other media in the set.' I tried several other disk from the same batch, and a couple from another collection. No dice; same message. I quit Retrospect and ran the script again, waited 35 minutes with the same results. I'm using version 6.1.126 with the update 6.1.1.101 on a Mac G4, with MacOS 10.3.9. Any suggestions? Ronaldo
Some added comment. This problem (disc cannot be added, media too different) arose with the first backup after installing 6.1. I did some searching and found in some obscure archive that back in June or July of this year a user from New Zealand had the same problem... and got the same response: nothing. I understand that Retros Tech support monitors this forum, maybe they can plug in here. After just getting this program I'm reluctant to spend $69 to get it to work. twickland
"Media too different" can mean that the last member of the backup set is damaged or wasn't closed/finished properly.

Did Retrospect work 35 minutes again on disk 13? Or did it ask for (and then fail to write to) disk 14? Or perhaps after quitting and restarting, you ran a backup to the second Backup Set you said you made? The details make the report. - What disk does the program request when you run an Immediate Backup to that Backup Set (no need to scan your entire Source volume; define a folder as a Subvolume and use that as a Source (making sure that it contains files not already backed up)? - If you configure the Backup Set to Skip to a new blank media (Configure->BackupSet->YourBackupSet->Media:Action->Skip) does it behave any differently? > I did some searching and found in some obscure archive that back in June or July of this year a >user from New Zealand had the same problem... and got the same response: nothing. That no one else in the user community volunteered a similar experience implies that it is an unusual problem, one that might very well be related to specific hardware or software. This time it did not ask for disc 13, but requested that I insert a new disc that would be named "disc 14." - What disk does the program request when you run an Immediate Backup to that Backup Set (no need to scan your entire Source volume; define a folder as a Subvolume and use that as a Source (making sure that it contains files not already backed up)? - If you configure the Backup Set to Skip to a new blank media (Configure->BackupSet->YourBackupSet->Media:Action->Skip) does it behave any differently? *These are things I didn't try, but will--as well as following up on the suggestion made by twickland. I have writtten the individual in New Zealand to see if he ever found a solution.
Ronaldo
- If you configure the Backup Set to Skip to a new blank media (Configure->BackupSet->YourBackupSet->Media:Action->Skip) does it behave any differently? *These are things I didn't try, but will--as well as following up on the suggestion made by twickland. Thank you, both. ** Couldn't do suggested Skip. My options are: Media: Action-> Normal, Recycle, or New Media. There is no "Skip". I did go to the Members tab and marked the last disc (13) as missing. According to the manua,l during the next backup Retro will see the disc as missing and create a new disc with the unbacked material. That has not happened. Retro continues to ask for a new disc to be named 14, and then identifies it as not acceptable because it is "too different" from the rest of the set. I have started from scratch and created a new set--with my fingers crossed. Thanks for you help.

Well, that's just wrong. I created a new CD/DVD Backup Set, wrote some data to member #1, and checked the configuration tab before posting my suggestion. I can see that "Skip" is a choice, although it's not a choice for some of the other Backup Set types. I think that this is a clue, although I'm not sure where it leads. Usually this means that there's some information missing, something that you haven't told us. You never did describe how the second Backup Set you created behaves... Ronaldo
In my response: Couldn't do suggested Skip. My options are: Media: Action-> Normal, Recycle, or New Media. There is no "Skip". Your response was: >Well, that's just wrong. >I created a new CD/DVD Backup Set, wrote some data to member #1, and checked the configuration tab >before posting my suggestion. I can see that "Skip" is a choice, although it's not a choice for some of the >other Backup Set types. >I think that this is a clue, although I'm not sure where it leads. Usually this means that there's some >information missing, something that you haven't told us. >You never did describe how the second Backup Set you created behaves... First, The second backup worked fine, as did an incermental backup to that set. Second, it's not wrong. I describe me actions. Maybe that will communicate better than words and arrows. I go to the Retrospect Driectory window and click Configure and then Backup Sets. That window shows a list of of backup sets on the left. On the right are buttons with options "New", "More", "Configure", "Forget". I select the "problem" set and click "Configure". This brings up a window with four options: "Summary", "Options", "Snapshot", and "Members". When I select "Options" I'm presented with a window that has three options: "Catalog", "Password", and "Media" (with an "Action" button. Pressing the "Action" button gives me a window with three more options: "Normal", "Recycle", and "New Media" (create new mackup set). I can't find any "skip". Besides my curiosity now (since a have a functioning set, I don't see a need to pursue this. I'll just hope that this is a rare anomaly and I'll never have to contend with it again. Thanks for your efforts. Ron
