redwolf2
Just did a restore that took 15 hours! for 13 GB. Anyone else have this trouble? Server is running on Dual G4. Restore Client is powerbook G4. Backup media is a mass storage system (ADIC tape/hard drives). I appreciate any info.
twickland
There are a lot of variables involved in the time it takes to restore. Restoring a single 13 GB file to a local HD will be a lot quicker than restoring an entire 13 GB disk with many small files over the net. If the backup catalog is huge because you haven't recently performed a recycle backup, and you have a tape backup set with many members, restoring an entire disk will take even longer, because the restore needs to pick its way through the early tape members, pulling off those few scattered files that haven't changed. Then, when you do reach a point where the files are more readily accessed, you may be hampered by the connection speed between server and client. The last full disk restore I performed, which would have been about 10-12 GB to a local HD out of a 400 GB tape backup set, took many hours to complete. 15 hours is admittedly a long time, though. redwolf2
What else do you need to know? Network is a GB fibre backbone. 100MB links to clients. No error in the retrospect log. It was just really slow 5 times slower than the backup. The situation was for disaster recovery. A laptop was having problems so I did a complete backup then reformatted the drive installed Tiger, retro client and updates. Then I did a restore. Since this was a dump/restore the data should not have moved onto tape in our Mass storage system. There were no errors in the operations log. twickland: I assume you are right, but would it still be slow coming off of Hard disks?

Did you back up to a new backup set, recycle the old backup set, or just add to the existing backup set? If your "complete backup" was adding to an existing backup set, you almost certainly had files that were backed up long ago but were unchanged, and therefore would not have been backed up again with your "complete backup." These old files would have needed to be retrieved for the restore, and if the backup set is huge, retrieval can take a long time. Just curious... how big (in GB and # of files) is the backup set you used for the restore? The best bet if you need to wipe and restore a drive is to perform a duplicate to a FW hard drive that has a copy of the Retrospect app on it. Barring that, the next best option is to perform a complete backup to a new backup set. Either one willl be much faster than restoring from a large, multisession backup set. As twickland's questions make clear, a complete, accurate description of the configurations and steps involved will _always_ yield answers sooner then going back and forth with other Forum participants.
