root/unknown error notice

Recommended Posts

One of my clients returns the same error message during normal backups. There are 82 files (many different types of files) that come back with the message "root/unknown" and "server: no privileges." I've used disk utility to repair permissions on the client machine but that didn't help. Any other ideas?

Sorry,

Mac OS 10.3 on all machines, Retrospect 6.1 and Client 6.1. Backups to an external HD connected to a Dual G5 Mac, the client is a dual G4.

Here is a sample of some of the log messages:

Can't read file “fontTablesAnnex”, error -54 (file is busy/locked), path: “RadiceG4/System/Library/Caches/fontTablesAnnex”.

Can't read file “AuthorizationTrampoline”, error -5000 (server: no privileges), path: “RadiceG4/System/Library/CoreServices/AuthorizationTrampoline”.

Can't read file “check_afp”, error -5000 (server: no privileges), path: “RadiceG4/System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/check_afp.app/Contents/MacOS/check_afp”.

Can't read file “com.apple.RemoteDesktopAgent.plist”, error -5000 (server: no privileges), path: “RadiceG4/Users/gary/Library/Preferences/com.apple.RemoteDesktopAgent.plist”.

Can't read file “sudo”, error -5000 (server: no privileges), path: “RadiceG4/usr/bin/sudo”.

Can't read file “ssh-keysign”, error -5000 (server: no privileges), path: “RadiceG4/usr/libexec/ssh-keysign”.

Can't read file “pppd”, error -5000 (server: no privileges), path: “RadiceG4/usr/sbin/pppd”.

Since you're getting the -5000 error not only on files owned by root (AuthorizationTrampoline), but also on files that are likely owned by a normal user (~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.RemoteDesktopAgent.plist), you should check to confirm that the Retrospect OS X Client process (pitond) is running as a root process.

On the Client machine, launch Activity Monitor and look for "pitond." The username should be "root."
