Verify is really slow

On my test system the verify process runs very slowly. The backup runs at 60 MB/s but the verify runs in the low single digits, with lots and lots of shoeshining. Why is this?

 

 

 

My system is an AMD 1.3 GHz with 512 MB RAM, Windows XP Pro, and an OnStream DI30 drive.

Make sure you are using the minimum supported version of firmware for your drive, which is 1.09. Go to Configure > Devices > Environment. The version number listed for the drive is your firmware version. If you have anything earlier then 1.09, make sure you upgrade through Onstream.

 

 

 

From what you've described it sounds like your tape drive is having trouble reading the tape. This is usually caused either by trouble with your media, your drive, or some other problem along your IDE channel. Does this happen when you try to backup to any other tape? If so, it's probably not a bad tape. To troubleshoot, first clean the heads on the drive. If you've never done it before, get a cleaning tape and clean them a few times. Then try again.

 

 

 

Make sure the drive is the Master drive on the secondary IDE channel.

 

 

 

Try 'verifying' the backup set from Tools > Verify. The tape drive will read the tapes in the set to make sure that all the files are readable. If you are still seeing extremely slow speeds, you may be having a problem with the tape drive.

I do have firmware 1.09, and it is the secondary master.

I have no problems backing up to any tape, I back up at 60 MB/s. The slowness is only when verifying.
