ProfN
With one exception, backup to DVD by Retrospect 6.0.212 (driver 6.6.101), the new G5 operates perfectly. The computer model: G5 with 2.0 ghz dual processor and 2.5 GB RAM The factory-installed optical device: Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A The media: Verbatim DVD-R The operating system: OS 10.4.2 I had no problems backing up to Verbatim DVD-R with an old G4 and an external LaCie DVD RW DL drive. But the Retro configuration attempt on the G5's Sony lasted 6 hours and 38 minutes with Retro hanging the machine. Force quit failed and I had to use the power button to re-start. I cut off another attempt after 3 hours. All I have to show for the time are destroyed DVD media and still no backup to DVD. Repair Permissions shows no problems. Ran TechTool 4.0.5 volume structure test, files tests, and finder info test/repair without incident. Ran DiskWarrior 3.0.3 rebuild volume directory. What now, please? ProfN
Followup test#1: The internal G5 optical device was able to Toast a DVD after the Retro 6 backup failures. So we know it has no trouble writing to DVD, only in doing so for Retrospect. Followup test #2": Although Retro 6 has played nice with my old G4 QuickSilver in backing up to the same Verbatim DVD-R media on an external 8x d2 DVD±RW Double Layer LaCie FireWire drive, when I brought over the external drive, it reported "trouble communicating: device trouble error 102" and the dialogue box "OK" was grayed out. Retro 6 had to be force quit. What else can I do, please? Respectfully, Norm
natew
Hi Norm, My guess is that DVD+R media will work but DVD-R probably won't. That has been my experience with the superdrives. We may just have to wait for a driver update from EMC Dantz. Be sure to try the auto configuration with Retrospect 6.1 Thanks Nate

Thanks very much for responding, Nate. 1. I thought that I had read in the Retro 6 forum a while back authoritative advice to use DVD-R media? I did on my G4 QuickSilver (2001) and have backup sets that worked great there with a LaCie external 8x d2 DVD±RW Double Layer drive. Do the different kinds of drives require different types of DVD media? Quote: We may just have to wait for a driver update from EMC Dantz. I really appreciate it that EMC Dantz is working on an RDU for compatibility with the factory-installed Sony DVD drive on the G5 Dual 2.0 (and perhaps the other dual models as well). Quote: Be sure to try the auto configuration with Retrospect 6.1 Nate, I have uninstalled 6.0.126 and installed 6.1 but apparently used the wrong keywords when I looked in its Help for "auto configuration", "auto configure", "autoconfigur" and "auto-configur"--can you suggest search keyword/s, please? Or a resource other than 6.1 Help? Respectfully, Norm
natew
Hi Retrospect doesn't care which media type you use. The problem is if the drive can properly respond to Retrospect commands with a given media type. long story short it is a hardware issue. I don't know if EMC Dantz is working on a driver now or even if they plan to. It is however a good guess that we are. Most mac drives get supported or at least an attempt at support. I'm not sure there is much in the manual. You will just need to go in configure->devices->device status and kick off the configuration. ProfN
"You will just need to go in configure->devices->device status and kick off the configuration." I know how to get to device status, but I do not understand what is meant by "kick off the configuration." Could you explain, please? Norm
natew
Hi Start it manually. You need to run it on different media types and see if it will work. there is a button in the top right corner of the window that says configure. Nate
ProfN
Dantz technical support told me at the 1st week of October that that they will develop an RDU for the Apple factory-installed G5 Dual 2.0 Sony DVD drive. Until a new RDU is released, however, the built-in, stock Sony drive is unsupported by Retrospect 6.1. Respectfully, Norm
ProfN
As I write this, I'm observing a lovely vision of Retrospect's Oct. 31 release of RDU 6.1.1.101 making it possible for me to create my first backup to a DVD on my new G5 Dual-Processor 2.0 GHz. The Apple factory-installed Sony DVD drive made it among supported drives in this first RDU for Retrospect 6.1, I'm delighted to report EMC Dantz has been exceptionally responsive and I'm most appreciative. Thanks so very much to the EMC Dantz Hardware team, Technical Support and the gurus who contribute to this Retro 6 forum.
