meliora
I've been using a Lacie AIT 3 external SCSI tape drive, connected to my Mac (a dual 450 Mhz G4, 1GB RAM) via an ATTO Express PCL UL3D adapter. Running Mac OS desktop v. 10.3.9, and Retrospect Workgroup version 6.0.178 (latest panther version, AFAIK), and I have ATTO driver version 3.2.0 installed (the latest). I've been getting lots of failed backups and restores, and errors in Retrospect like: "Trouble Reading <tape name> (5010883), error 205 (lost access to storage medium)" "Device trouble: <tape name> error 206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc.)" I've tried using new tapes, and running multiple cleaning cycles on the drive. Is my LaCie toast? Any other possibilities? Thanks!
natew
Hi First, update to Retrospect 6.0.204 and driver update 6.5. Then use the Atto SCSI utility to drop the sync rate of the SCSI adapter to 20 DT. That shouldn't slow the backup down but it will simplify communications on the SCSI bus. You can also try turning off command queueing but that will probably slow down the backup a bit. Thanks Nate
meliora
Sorry - I posted the wrong info - I am on 6.0.204, and RDU 6.5.102. Anyway, thanks for the response. If dropping the sync rate works, what kind of problem would that indicate?
natew
Hi It would indicate you have a SCSI device in OSX... It is probably a communication problem of some kind. The true cause is hard to say. Nate
