Attempting to eject DVD backup disk causes system crash

Recommended Posts

After completing a DVD backup in Retrospect 6 [1], attempting to eject the DVD [3] from the Finder causes my system [2] to hang, and I have to shut down using the power button, then eject the disk by holding the mouse down on startup, or using the eject key at the login window.

I have tried ejecting using the eject key, the "eject disk" menubar item, and the eject button next to the disk name in the Finder sidebar. I have even tried using the Terminal and diskutil to eject the disk. The result is the same every time. It's getting a bit tiresome to force reboot every Friday after I've completed my DVD backups.

I tried ticking the "Eject on quit" option in the Media Handling preferences of Retrospect, but this seems to be ignored. I would prefer to have Retrospect quit after completing a backup, as it performs a backup to an external drive every night, but for now I have set it to "Stay in Retrospect" so I can eject DVDs from the Configure>Devices panel. Hopefully this will avoid the crash, but it's not very convenient.

Any help/advice much appreciated.

1. Retrospect 6.0.212

2. OS X 10.4.2

3. Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D

- Is this after Retrospect has quit?

- If you re-launch Retrospect, and you eject the disk from the program?

- What exactly do you mean by "hang?" Can you connect via ssh from another machine (meaning only the Finder is hung)? Does the mouse move?

- What model of Macintosh is this drive in?

I'd suspect the File System Plugin to be the cause, which is designed to allow drives written with Retrospect to show up in the Finder with a pretty icon. I'm not exactly sure where it's stored in 6.x, so the easiest way to remove it would be to run the Retrospect installer and have it Uninstall everything (except NOT your preferences!), then do a custom install of the program only. Then restart.

A search of the Dantz KnowledgeBase gave me this article about how to remove it for a 5.1 install, but I can't confirm if the instructions are the same for 6.0 (I didn't install it on my machine):

Yes.

I haven't tried this, as the system crashes and I have to force shutdown. You'd think I'd have learned not to attempt to eject the disk by now.

It starts with the SPOD on the Finder, and the Wacom tablet driver stops. The mouse will move, and I can switch between windows, but as soon as I bring an application to the front, that displays the SPOD too. Within a few clicks, nothing will respond, and I cannot bring up the Force Quit window or the Shutdown/Sleep/Restart controls. I have left it for up to an hour to see if it recovers, but eventually have to shut down using the power button. I can connect via SSH, and tried to use diskutil to eject the drive from the command line, but diskutil hangs too, and I cannot kill the process once it's hung.

Thank you for the suggestions. I'll see if I can remove the Finder plugin first before uninstalling Retrospect.
