brianl_95616
I use a DP 1.8 G5 and OS10.4.2 and Retrospect 6.0.212 (Driver 6.5.102) and multiple firewire (400 and 800) for back-up of a coporate (mixed PC and Mac) network. I have a gigabit network interface, however most of the PCs are 10/100. I've noticed that back-up speed is either in the 20-50 MB/min range or in the 125-160 MB/min range. It does not seem to be related to day or time-of-day. I back-up a local volume that exhibits the same behavior (i.e., it doesn't seem to be a network issue). There is no difference between the FW400 and FW800 drives. I use software compression; the links are not encrypted, but I am using fast encryption on the back-up files. Does anyone have any tips on increasing the back-up speed?
natew
Hi Try setting the network speed to 100MB full duplex on the Mac. Try the same thing on some clients that are slow. Chances are all the machines are set to autodetect network speed. A lot of times this doesn't work well but you don't tend to notice until you have a program like Retrospect moving lots of data and measuring the speed. Thanks Nate
