Help me avoid a big, fat headache, please!

Recommended Posts

Greetings all.

Time to replace our old G4 server (faithful for 5 years+)! Can anyone offer me feedback on my new system configuration? I am trying to avoid problems down the road, specifically with Tiger, Retrospect and the backup device.

- Apple G5 running Tiger and the Apple OS X Server software

- LaCie "Biggest F800" RAID 5 Tower (1 TB) (will use Firewire 800)

- Retrospect Workgroup 6.0 (I know I need the new driver 6.4.102)

- LaCie d2 DVD/RW 16x (supported by Retrospect 6) (will use Firewire 400)

Retrospect will be doing an incremental backup Monday-Thursday and a complete (recycle) backup on Friday of the G5 and RAID tower...no other backups other than the server itself (and the RAID tower).

Currently, our older G5 server is using a SDLT tape drive for backups. The cost of the SDLT tape drives are expensive, even though we have been pleased with their performance. We use them for daily backups and archiving. How does the LaCie d2 DVD/RW compare with the SDLT? SCSI v. Firewire. I'd love to switch over to DVDs if we can keep the reliability the same.

If we switch over to DVD backup, we'll probably put both the old and new server (both G5s) on the same backup device.

Thanks, guys. Any and all feedback is appreciated.
