dhwagner
Let's say I'm shopping for a DVD burner to use with Retrospect. Is there anyway to know in advance how its speed with Retrospect will compare to another burner? Is there any relationship between the 16X, 8X rating and the packet writing speed? Will a 16X burner with 16X media write twice as fast as an 8X burner with 8X media?
iGary
Retrospect will operate at nothing but a pathetically slow speed with DVD. You will be very lucky to get a successful burn/backup with Retrospect & optical media.
waltr
Retrospect will perform considerably faster with +R or +RW media than -R or -RW. I agree with the above poster that DVD backups are less reliable than other media. The ease with which you can make coasters with ANY software is unparalleled IMHO. iGary
I have tried using Retrospect versions 4, 5 and 6 on OS 9, Jaguar, Panther and Tiger on about a dozen different Macs and different burners. Retrospect's failure rate is > 75% on optical media. The Mac OS disc burning, Toast, Dragon Burn and Discribe have > 99% success rate. I have posted this here before and got nothing but lame excuses that it is so difficult to make Retrospect reliable with optical media because of the different drive manufacturers and changing firmware, and different media. If true, why does every alternate to Retrospect have such superior reliability with optical media given the same conditions?
