Guest
From what documentation I can find, this error pertains to CD/DVD media. What does it mean when I get it trying to backup to an external hard drive? I'm backing up clients with a script and configuration that has been working fine for months. twickland
You haven't supplied much information for us to go on. What OS, Retrospect, and Retrospect Driver Update versions are you using? Is the external drive a FireWire or USB drive? Does the error occur repeatably, with all clients, and/or when performing a backup of a local hard drive? If you haven't changed anything (hardware or software) recently, your external hard drive may have a corrupt directory or be failing. Try repairing the directory with Disk Utility. If the error is readily repeatable, try creating a subvolume on your local hard drive and backing up to the subvolume to see if the error goes away. If it does, that would suggest problems with the external drive, the interconnecting cable, or the interface.
Guest
Thank you for considering my problem, here is some more info: Max OS 10.4.1 (server) Max OS 10.3.9 (clients) Retrospect 6.0.204 Latest Drivers (whatever the # is) FW Drive meant FireWire Drive - manufacturer is Oxford Error repeats will all clients (3). Have not see it when backing up local drive. I checked the FW drive with Disk Utility and it said that it appeared OK. On the trial you suggested, I presume that "local hard drive" means the external FW drive?
Guest
I backed up to another File Backup Set on the same drive and it worked fine. I left it at home this AM doing a Verify on the File Set - maybe that will tell me something.
twickland
You should be using Retrospect 6.0.212 and Driver Update 6.4.102 on your backup server with Tiger. When I said "local hard drive" I meant your internal drive. That suggestion was to enable you to use another piece of hardware instead of your FW drive. However, if you indeed are able to back up successfully to a new file backup set on the external FW drive on a consistent basis, there is no need to perform a test using your internal drive as a destination unless the problem returns. Guest
The Verify also terminated with Error 105 - I conclude that the backup file was corrupted. I did a recycle backup to it, and it is OK now (except, of course, that I lost the historical info - not much of a problem in this case - I hope). Thank you for your help.
