Running a routine backup from a client to a ReadyNas unit - done before.

Using v12.0.0.188

The system went into an "active hang" with non-stop activity on the NAS and a log entry of:

-    12/05/2017 09:54:13: Copying DATA (D:) on *********
        12/05/2017 09:54:45: Found: 30,216 files, 2,840 folders, 106.1 GB
        12/05/2017 09:54:46: Finished matching
        12/05/2017 09:54:52: Copying: 2,732 files (102.1 GB) and 0 hard links
-    12/05/2017 11:28:51: Verifying DATA (D:) on ***********
[*] soccRecv: recv failed, error 10054
        [*] soccCallback: kNetSelectorClose error 10053
Grooming Backup Set VSH XPS8900, optimizing for storage...

It's now 6hrs after I started. The activity monitor shows 176577 files remaining taking up 1290.9 GB on a disk partition of 1.34TB of which 1.3 is free!

------------------------------------------------

Stopped the execution and reran the backup:

All went well to start with. Backup and verification of C: was fast.

D: copied quickly, then something happened on verification. It showed 1,283.7 GB to verify, due to take 6 days, then went lost the time scale, but still showed a throughput of 137.1MB/min.

Log showed:

-    12/05/2017 15:59:51: Copying DATA (D:) on **********
        12/05/2017 16:00:24: Found: 30,267 files, 2,873 folders, 106.1 GB

        12/05/2017 16:00:32: Copying: 2,666 files (102.0 GB) and 0 hard links

        [*] soccCallback: kNetSelectorClose error 10053

The ReadyNAS logs and SMART logs show no errors......

What do I do?

What to do depends on a number of things:

Is this the only backup you have? If not, just recycle it to start over.

If it is the only backup, move the offending file (AA000060.rdb) to another folder, rebuild/recreate the catalog file and run a backup. The files backed up to AA000060.rdb will be backed up again (if they still exist).

I must say that running out of space so a groom must occur during a backup is not desirable. You should plan your backups according to the available space, or buy more space.

Lennart, I have 1.24TB free out of a total of 5.39TB!!!

Since I posted, I've run a full volume file scan with no errors, then recreated the catalog from disk files.

Now I'm rerunning the backup job, which has backed up the C: drive with no errors and is currently grooming....

Retrospect does not think so, since it starts grooming during the backup.

There is a setting in the backup set, where you can (should) set how much of the member volume that Retrospect can use. Try setting it to 99%. (I think I have read somewhere that you should not set it to 100% as that would cause problems grooming.)

OK, I see what's happened. I built a new catalog, and Retrospect groomed the backup set - see previous listing. During the process I looked at the NAS and there was a complete backup of the backup set - 1.2TB!

After the grooming this disappeared.

After the whole process I seem to have a proper backup.....
