New media needed

We're using Retrospect 10.5 after using 6 for many years, and one thing 6 had in Configure > Backup was that it would tell you if new media was required. I cannot find this in 10.5. How do you tell if a backup needs new media next time?

How could version 6 possibly tell how much data would be backed up the next time? (How many updated and new files there are since the last backup and how much space they require.)

 

I guess the "feature" was removed because it was unreliable.

It would give that message if the media on the last backup had become full and no new media had been started since. So you could see at a glance if new media was needed for the next backup, something which as I say I cannot find in 10.

I don't have version 10.x. I have version 9 and it provides a good view: Just watch out for anything red.

But that, as you say, is approximate, and is based on a guess of how much the media will store. All I'm after is a simple indication that the media filled up during the last backup and a new one is required.

No, in version 9 it tells you how much is filled. It does not predict anything.

 

If/when the member becomes full, you will be prompted for a new member. You must either provide a new member or manually stop the execution. So you will know in good time before the next execution that a new member is needed.

 

For the functionality you are looking for, simply look at the "Free" column. If it says "0", you need a new member.

Actually Retrospect will tell you that you need new media via the Activities window, when you highlight the current backup, and look in the summary pane. It will come up with a little icon, and a media request message. This is where you will have to click on the action button (or whatever it is) to resolve the problem.
