Retro 9.5.3.103 data overwrite attempt -- no fault recovery

When it works Retrospect is great. But it often falls on its face if something doesn't go right, and it never recovers so that no more backups are done until the user intervenes. You need to find way to work around errors and continue to make backups! Example below.

Retrospect got "stuck" on something. and started reporting a "error -106 ( data overwrite attempt)." Reboot of PC and repower of USB drive where backup is stored didn't change anything. Tried to Repair Catalog (many of the same error messages, never game up and moved on, see below) and Repair Backup Set (wouldn't even try, just complained about a non-file backup set. That was a useless message??).

I eventually abandoned the backup set and created a new one, with Retro taking many hours to back up everything all over again. I hope to not need any older versions of any files. I then deleted the old Retrospect backup directory (I had no problem renaming AB000046.rdb or deleting it).

Delete the problem file and create it again? I can do that from Windows.
Rename the problem file and create a new one?  I can do that from Windows.
Create a new file with a slightly different name and leave the "bad" one alone?  I can do that from Windows.
Do *not* need to fail permanently.

Have you checked the file system on the USB disk to ensure it is error free?

 

Have you tried a different USB disk with a different backup set to see if the problem persists?

 

Retrospect knows what files it created and where it created them so moving, copying, renaming and deleting Retrospect's '.rdb' files is asking for trouble.
