Caches: Which include in 1. bootable duplicate? 2. backup set?

Recommended Posts

1. Which, if any, caches does one need to duplicate to a bootable OS 10.3.4 partition on a 2nd hard drive?

2. In creating a Retrospect backup set (rather than a duplicate), which caches, if any need to be included from a Panther partition?

The term "Caches" is used in Retrospect only to describe browser caches. Operating system caches are not selected by this filter. So a backup of "All files except cache files" will catch all the cache files that exist at the time of the backup (assuming you're backing up the boot volume).

Thanks for making that clear, Dave. That leads to two follow-up questions, please.

1. I'm wondering what folders of caches--beyond those for browsers--one can safely color-label from the Finder to have Retrospect exclude from Duplication? To express it in another way, what caches have to be included in duplicating to a bootable Panther volume with Applications that operate the same way as they do on the volume from which you duplicate?

2. Switching the topic from Duplication to creation of Backup Sets, what cache folders can the user safely exclude or what cache folders need to be included to reconstruct the OS and Applications to work properly if one has to depend completely on a CD or DVD Backup Set at a remote location in that rebuilding on another computer?

Respectfully, Norm
