Will Retrospect Erase Entire FireWire Drive?

Recommended Posts

I've downloaded a trial of Retrospect 6 for Mac Desktop; I read in the preferences that when I choose my FireWire drive as the removable disk, "Restrospect will erase and require exclusive use of each drive added as a backup set."

Will it erase the entire drive? I'm only backing up about 5.5G from my old TiBook to the 60G hard drive. I have lots of other files stored on that drive and certainly don't want to erase them.

The answer to this question will determine whether I purchase the software after the trial.

If you have set Retrospect's preferences to allow fixed platter media (such as a FW hard drive) to act as removable media then Retrospect will erase and name such a disk the first time it's used as a member of a Backup Set.

If you want to use your hard drive for other things besides your Retrospect backup, configure a File Backup Set instead. This wil be just two regular files on the drive and Retrospect will not touch anything else there.
