willfurby
I am running Retrospect 7.6.2.101 on a SBS 2011 box I am unable to add a client machine which is running windows 7 64bit SP1 I have tried using the client installer version 7.6.107 and 7.6.106 During the installation on the client machine an error appears "RegCreateKey(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, "SOFTWARE\Dantz\RetrospectClient\5.0\Install", ...) returned 5" The installation appears to complete and the registry appears to have entries in the path mentioned in the error message above. I have tried uninstalling/ reinstalling the software as well as running the installation as both a local administrator / a domain admin with no differences in results. The retrospect client management area seems to function properly reporting no first access. The sbs environment can test ping through the add client wizard both via IP address and Hostname. But when actually adding the client retrospect reports "Couldn't add backup client, error -560" Any help would be appreciated, if additional information is needed just let me know. Thank you! ,Sean
Lennart_T
Error 5 in that context (installation and RegCreateKey) means "access is denied". http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms681382(v=vs.85).aspx It probably means a permissions problem. Scillonian
Have you tried installing the client application in compatibility mode on Windows 7? Try Vista or XP which were current in the 7.6 era. Right click on the client installer application and select the options to run in compatibility mode. As an alternative you could try installing the 7.7 client which knows about Windows 7. In theory 7.6 should be able to work with a 7.7 client. When I was testing 8.0 I was using 7.7 to backup a Windows 8 Pro system that had the 8.0 client application installed on it.

scstock
I quote rhwalker. Please provide: (1) complete version number of Retrospect (2) complete version number of Retrospect Driver Update (3) complete version number of the OS (4) complete description of hardware being used. (5) complete description of the steps you are doing (6) complete description of the problem I'm attempting to install Retrospect Client 9.0 on a virtual machine running Vista Home Premium; hardware is a Mac Pro I have installed Vista and let it run all the security updates. As I cannot successfully complete the Install, I cannot run any updates. I have also tried the 7.6 installer. The steps I am taking and problem I am experiencing is identical to that in the opening post - almost as soon as the installation process starts an Error appears with the message During the installation on the client machine an error appears "RegCreateKey(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, "SOFTWARE\Dantz\RetrospectClient\5.0\Install", ...) returned 5" As the link you posted above to Microsofts error messages says : The information on this page is intended to be used by programmers so that the software they write can better deal with errors. If you are an end-user that is experiencing difficulty with an application you are installing or running, contact customer support for the software that is displaying the error message.] I have been successfully using several different versions of Retrospect for many years now, on a mix of Windows PCs (physical and virtual) and Macs in our office, so I am baffled as to how the Client Installer can fall at the first hurdle in this case. Lennart_T
Thank you so much for your patronising and unhelpful "answer". Well, I did try to help you as best as I can and on my spare time. But when YOU have problems and YOU get a message telling YOU to contact support, that is what YOU should do. Right? So I posted the link on how to contact support. Why do you think I'm unhelpful? Scillonian
In the context of "Couldn't add backup client, error -560" the 'error -560' is for an invalid private/public key pair. If the Backup Server cannot authenticate with the Client then the Client cannot be added. My guess would be that the the registry key quoted in the Client installer error message is where the key pair is stored. (I cannot say what the contents of this registry key should be as they do not exist with the Retrospect 9.0 Client on Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit.)When an installer produces error message about not being able to create/modify registry keys it is usually down to a permissions problems. This can be down to the installer being run without sufficient permissions or corruption of the registry itself. There are many reasons why the registry can become corrupted.Referring specifically to the new Vista install where the Client will not install, what I have encountered several times of late is when trying to bring a clean reinstall of Windows 7 (especially in VMs) up to date is Windows Update failing to install some of the updates and corrupting the install in various ways including the registry at times. This is with Windows Update being allowed to install all updated it can find in one go. My solution has been to install updates in small batches of twenty or so at a time.
scstock
SOLVED thank you Scillonian, that put me on the right track. Even when running the Retrospect Client Installer immediately after the Vista Installer completes (i.e. before any automatic updates) I was getting the same error. However, having found advice online about right-clicking the setup.exe in order to to Run as Administrator, I actually found that simply by running the setup.exe file rather than the Retrospect Client 9.0 Installer Package allowed the process to complete - after confirming a dialogue window concerning permissions. Phew!
Mayoff
> 7.6.2.101 on a SBS 2011 Retrospect 7.6 is totally unsupported on Windows 2011. Using the 7.6 version to back up Windows 7 or later could result in dataloss when doing backups of your operating system. You should be using 7.7 or later for Windows 7 and later. scstock
I can't believe I'm here 9 years later having exactly the same issue with Retrospect 15.
