oslomike
Anyone ever have an 8mm tape that developed da mechanical problem but the tape itself was ok? Can the tape be transferred to a new cassette? Mike
Lennart_T
If the cassette is screwed together it would be possible to carefully take apart the broken cassette and a new one and transfer the spools with tape. But if the cassette is glued, you have to break it apart. That may or may not work.
oslomike
Thanks lennart! Would the chip on the ait tape matter if the tape was swapped?
Lennart_T
I'm going to expose my lack of knowledge right away and ask: What chip? If that chip identifies the tape, you might have to do a recatalog, so Retrospect doesn't think you put in the wrong tape. So I have never done this with an 8mm cassette, but it must be doable (I think).
oslomike
There are 5 gold plated contacts on the back edge of the ait tapes. I was told that there was a chip on. Jars the tapes. I'm no expert either.
Mayoff
I do not believe Retrospect even uses the chip on tape. You can try doing this yourself or try a data recovery service like drive savers.
oslomike
As it turns out. It seems that the drive has a problem rewinding. I'm pretty sure the tape Itself is ok.
