Lock client configuration

Recommended Posts

I've started testing the Restrospect some time ago. It seems to be working well for me except one thing. I'm looking for a way to lock the client application configuration, so the user would not be able to change some part of it. Especially the On/Off switch and "Do not backup" folders, the "backup up now" option should be always accessible.

If the user is not an administrator=member of the, the user can not change the settings.

(And if the user is and administrator, she/he could change it anyway by just editing the right file.)

Not necessarily true, regular users may have just as much access to change the client settings as an administrator. Under the preferences tab they can change the notification times and priority. Under the access tab, they can click the box for "private files/folder/volumes" and prevent directories from backing up, even though an administrator may want them to be backed up. The can also set the backup time from the normal schedlue to "as soon as possible".

There is no option on the server side to prevent these changes. There may be a client side .xml file somewhere, but I have no idea what it would be.

As a work-a-round, you can try removing user permissions on C:\Windows\SysWOW64\RetroClient.cpl (Win 7 x64 system) and only allowing adminstrators access to it.

The retroclient.cpl is what launches the retrospect client. Alternatively you can require that the RetroClient.cpl run only with an admin account by doing the following (note that this is a Win 7 x64 system I'm working from:

  1. Open Regedit.exe with administrative rights

  1. Navigate to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ AppCompatFlags\Layers

  1. Double click on the “C:\Windows\SysWOW64\RetroClient.cpl” string to edit it

  1. Under Value Data, add “RUNASADMIN”

  1. Click OK and close Regedit.exe

  1. When you run the retrospect client, you should nowr receive prompts to enter elevated credentials to continue running the application.
