956b20c8-136a-4baf-ae4c-fd7336e94c85
Hello, I had the memory problem when 7.7 was originally released and Retrospect would crash with an assertion error. This never was resolved even though Robin got involved. Then Roxio took over Retrospect and I never heard anything about it. Well the need for updated software is becoming more pressing so I have upgraded to version 7.7.562. I am no longer receiving the assertion error but I am getting another one which causes the server's local drives to not be backed up. Obviously this is quite a problem and any input anyone has would be a great help. Here is the error: Scanning incomplete, error -642 ( chunk file map missing/damaged) This is received for both drives so neither the data nor the OS is getting backed up. I have tried numerous things including: Deleting the backup set and recreating, deleting the backup set and catalog and recreating, rebooting the server, and running check disk on both drives. Trying to look up the error here at Roxio's knowledge base yields absolutely nothing. Searching for it at Dantz's simply errors out. Googling for it does not yield much other then to say it could be a hard drive problem and with everything else I have done plus the fact that this server is running fine I do not think it is a hard drive issue. If anyone can provide any insight into this error it would be greatly appreciated! Dan
Lennart_T
Scanning error most likely either a communications problem or a disk directory problem. Have you checked the directory with CHKDSK? With surface scan? How are the "local" drives attached to the server? Fibre, SCSI, SAS, SATA,...? Are all the drivers (and firmware) updated? SCSI properly terminated?

The system's been running Retrospect fine up until this point for a number of years now.

The disk directory, which also is called disk catalog or file system: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_system Did you do a surface scan in CHKDSK? Check the SCSI cables and SCSI termination. Check the SCSI cables and SCSI termination. Hello Lennart, I ran a chkdsk /r which does do a surface scan yes. The system is a Dell Poweredge 2800 using a scsi backplane. All drives are locked into place and the backplane does termination automatically. No drives have been changed or removed recently and if there were problems with the backplane we would be seeing a lot more problems than just this. Thanks!
